The Winnipeg Blue Bombers want a new home. Now they're going to find out if they can get it.

A provincial government source confirmed yesterday the CFL team, in conjunction with Red River Exhibition Park and Canad Corp., will announce today the start of a federally funded study that will examine the feasibility of building a multi-use sports facility on the western edge of Winnipeg.

New Winnipeg Stadium?

Here's a picture. Hope it works. Looks like it could be a pretty nice facility, even though it resembles a toilet seat.

That is one of the ugliest hotels ever.

Some people in Winnipeg dont like that the proposal is on the western edge of Winnipeg, yet the existing facility is in Polo Park, barely ten minutes east. Not much of an extra distance to go for a better facility in a better location.

I read somewhere else that they hope that the partially covered roof will help the stadium with year round entertainment.

Sorry, but anything less than a fully covered roof won't do much to help with a Winnipeg winter. Economically, can they make this work, or is it just another goverment funded revitalization project.

Egads that does look like a toilet seat! Snowdrifts off that thing could kill someone...

Federally funded? Why?
Secondly, if they wanted a new stadium, maybe they should have thought about it when they had a need for in (Pan-am Games).

Maybe its me, but is that drawing meant to make it look like Wembley? Looks huge, but only supposed to seat 30,000?

Sure, you'll get the annual Guess Who concert for the next 5 years to fill it, and the home opener for the Bombers and a Grey Cup but like every other open air stadium in Canada, it'll sit vacant for 4 or 5 months of the year.

Waste of Federal $$ IMO. Should've spent the $$ from this study on putting 2-3K more seats in the arena, and then they may have a faint faint hope of being an NHL city again one day.

I like the idea and I like the stadium. Maybe if Calgary would even look at building or renevating, we don't have much to brag about. McMahon stadium is aging very badly. The grey clubhouse and the exposed concession area doesn't cut it anymore. In what is supposed to be the 4th largest city in Canada, we sure don't have a stadium that fits into that role. I would like to see a major overhaul of McMahon, including a seating capacity of 40,000 to 45,000, cover up the whole exterior, all new concessions, and remove that ugly grey siding and put in place some nice glass and steel facade...paint the 4 towers black! Insert that grass turf, fix up the press boxes and most importantly remove the clubhouse and in its place have bleachers that wrap around that whole side with a new clubhouse underneath.

For our city, McMahon does not cut it in it's current state. I would actually approve more of a renovation project, then building a whole new stadium. A good 30 million would help rejuvenate McMahon, bring out more fans, while still preserving the legacy of the original McMahon with a new feel.

Just build a damn football stadium. Forget the stupid hotel and water park. Who's going to stay at a hotel out in the middle of nowhere anyway? The 8 or 10 home games the Bombers play and the aformentioned Guess Who concert will not be enough to keep the place going I wouldn't think.

Calgary could sure use one of these....especially since we dont really have a respectable soccer pitch either. It would be nice to build a medium sized stadium that could handle football, soccer, as well as other track and field tournaments.

Although I sure hope they dont put it out in the middle of nowhere, like the Winnipeg proposal. Stadiums should be close to the inner city and mass transit, thereby helping create a lively atmosphere environment for not only the game, but the surrounding downtown area.

The best thing for Winnipeger's would be if the Blew Bummers moved..... to Brandon.

I believe the reasoning behind the hotel idea was, the location is at the interchange of the Trans-Canada and Winnipeg's perimeter highway. They figure traffic passing through would rather stay there than driving into the city. Also, there are currently no hotels in that area.

Good luck Winnipeg, you'll need it. The thing is fugly and not a good use of funds, but hey, they aren't paying for it so who cares.

Is this thing built over water or what? The birds eye view shows it being on land, but the north approach shows part of it over water.

Screw the open stadium make it a dome or a roof that can be removed in good weather like Skydome but nicer. Calgary needs a new stadium it's 2005! McManhon is how old? It has to be at least 40 years or more by now!
