Alberta's Official Sport: Rodeo
http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/WeirdNew...523371-cp.html
Quote:
The outgoing leader of the Alberta Liberals managed to wrangle his legislative colleagues on Monday night to support his private member's bill to make rodeo Alberta's official sport. "I'm delighted to see the motion pass," Taft said after the bill received overwhelming all-party approval.
"Whether it is the Calgary Stampede, the Canadian Finals Rodeo in Edmonton, the Ponoka Stampede or the Thorhild Rodeo, Albertans from across the province clearly love rodeo."
...
"No other sport carries such a deep connection to our province's land and wildlife," Taft said, noting that the bill must still be approved by the government.

All the four western provinces have rodeos.
And what is wrong with having a provincial sport? Any other suggestions from the haters?

Wasn't aware of that as I don't watch them much anyway, when I do I cheer for the animals to crush those stinking humans
BTW, what are the provincial sports of other provinces?
I can take a guess at a few but I'm not sure.
BC - log throwing
Manitoba - snowshoe racing
PEI - Potato Throwing
Anymore?

The world economy in in a dive and the Alberta oil producers are in trouble and.....
our legislature is debating what our provincial sport should be.
What is wrong with that picture?

As a bluenoser I take great offense in the miss-spelling of provincial art!
Drinking Keiths in Nova Scotia isn't a sport though...It's a demanded thing your born with that you do at sporting events, lying on the coach, having sex or watching your first child being born.

Quite the legacy Taft is leaving...this is the only thing he seemed to manage to pass as a Liberal MLA and leader of the opposition, over all these years.

It should be tractor pulls. Nothing like a good hoe down after pulling something heavy through the mud.

I seriously don't understand why people are upset with this or think it's stupid.
Seriously, what difference does it make if we have a provincial sport.
And if they are going to pick one, I think rodeo is as good a choice as any other. I mean yeah the easy choice is hockey, but picking hockey is like allowing people to pick their own nicknames, everyone would be "The Duke".

Meh, this sort of motion is the only one that the Liberals have even a remote chance of getting passed.
Personally, I would have chosen curling. It would have played well with rural alberta almost as well as rodeos, and would have played better in urban centers, probably. And we've got a fairly dominant history in the sport, given that whoever comes out of Alberta is almost guaranteed to be a favorite at the Briar.

Yukon, BC, Sask, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec all have rodeos. Atlantic Canada clubs seals instead.
