West Calgary Ring Road Going Ahead?
I guess I should have bumped by previous thread on Glenmore at 37th, but as traffic at this intersection has been getting more insane by the day, I was looking on the web for info about the ring road, and it looks like the next segment to be built will be the Highway 8 (Glenmore) to Highway 1 stretch, with no plans for the segment through the reserve yet. On the web site, it says they will be finishing the planning next year and hope to have the road built by 2015. To me, it seems crazy to build this section of the ring road before the other segment is in place... it's just going to dump more traffic onto Glenmore, which is already overwhelmed at rush hour.
FYI, there is an information session tomorrow on this project.

Where does it talk about a 2015 completion? Says 2035 on that website. Expect it to be done before then, though.
My guess is that it may be close to done by 2015.

Check the FAQ section. (I have quoted the relevant section below.) I think the 2035 date comes from the old plan. They are currently working out the new plan, which is to be completed shortly.
When is the entire Ring Road expected to be completed?
Alberta Transportation has indicated that they would like to have the
ring road constructed by 2015.

I'd still like to know how they're going to go straight up that COP hill.

I believe the hill will be trenched to create a gradual slope, the road will probably be substantially below the grade level of Cougar Ridge at the top of the hill and gradually reach natural grade as it approaches Bow Trail.

Are they going to go through Patterson, or behind.

From what I have heard, the road is to border the west side of Cougar Ridge and at or around a grade of 130 ft below the housing on that side. There wasn't to be an access from Old Banff Coach Road.

There is a community meeting re the west ring road tomorrow night.
I have no problem with this leg getting done earlier than the reserve part. I think Glenmore between Sarcee and 85th ish needs to be twinned anyway.
Is it really Highway 8 there, or is it still Glenmore Trail until the city limits. I always use Glenmore and people correct me saying "you mean hwy 8?" and I say no, not yet.

It's a goofy intersection. Glenmore turns into Sarcee at the Hwy 8 intersection. Hwy 8 goes all the way out to 22, but it's 8 all the way.

It will sort of go up the hill diagonally, an then basically to the lowest point in the ridge. If you are driving south on Stoney coming up to sixteenth Ave, look at about 11 O'clock. That's where the road goes up. Plus, they move some of the top of the hill to fill in at the bottom.
I imagine it will end up at about a 3% grade (same as on Deerfoot coming up of the Bow valley at the southern city limit.

i hope that they figure out the Glenmore Trail / 37th Street intersection first. That is the bottleneck most of the time, and it will only increase with this plan.

No doubt, I love telling people to take Glenmore west to Sarcee, then turn left on Glenmore.
The street signs at 69th street say Glenmore Trail still.

Disagree. With the Tsuu TIna dragging thier feet for over 3 years now, no way does the city make access to that Casino a smidge easier until they get the land for the ring road.
If all went to plan, the city would've had that intersection done, and 3 lanes on Glenmore all the way through to Sarcee, in addition to that new massive interchange at Sarcee being half done by now.
They've rejigged the lights too to make it a longer green on Glenmore and longer wait on 37th. I live in the area and I wouldn't care if they took out the left turn onto 37th either.
Still stupid for the city to allow that Casino to open without getting the land first. Harper needs to flex some executive MP muscle and get this sorted out ASAP.
And, while we're in that area, kick those freeloading squatters out of Black Bear crossing...the agreement was that the Tsuu T'ina were to shut down and tear that eyesore down the minute that the casino opened. Those people have no right to be there, as its questionable as to if their even band members...probably aren't, because all the band members have vacated and relocated on the reserve as they promised to do.

The problem is that the only way to avoid going over the Reserve's land is to build straight over the western edge of the reservoir, right over the Weaselhead Park area, which is a designated natural preserve. Every time it has been suggested to do that, there have been howls of protest from people who want to protect the Weaselhead.
The Reserve starts at 37 St and extends out to Bragg Creek, so going around the Reserve to the west isn't really a viable option.

The only people I see concerned about the Weaselhead, are anonymous men stumbling out of the bushes, zipping up their pants.

Any time that I go by there, even after the supposed longer green, it is still an insane traffic backlog. Just last week I went through there and, with dry roads, only about 10-15 cars made it through on Glenmore. I was lucky to have been going east... the people coming west were backed up almost to Crowchild. So much for the rejigged lights.
Making more traffic go through there, especially after they're used to having free flowing traffic all the way along, is only going to make things worse and make that intersection even more of a bottle neck.
Screw the casino. I don't care about it. I just want traffic on Glenmore to actually flow! They need to at least triple the time on that light, if not more.
