Default Huge ant colony entombed in cement

10 tons of cement are poured into an ant colony, allowed to harden and then excavated...

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.

Wow, that's incredible. Such a small, simple insect creating all of that because of some ant collective will. That really is impressive.

Amazing! Thanks.

Ants are probably one of my favourite creatures. I could sit and watch them all day.

Here's a supercolony from Europe (stretches 600km!)

How is it you knew of a giant ant colony and didn't tell me? Wow. I could stare at something like that all day.

I really hate that terribly dramatic kind of documentary narrating, and I don't like that they destroyed something so incredible (no doubt impacting the surrounding ecosystem) just to satisfy their scientific interest. What they uncovered is really cool, but I don't like it very much.

I'm sure the local ecology will survive 0.000000000000000000000000000001% of the population of ants being forcefully relocated.

I'm sure the local ecology will survive too. I still don't like destroying something amazing in order to study it though. It's a reflection of an anthropocentric view of the universe that I do not like.

Ants have amazed me since I was very young. Easily one of the most successful species on the planet. And like humans, able to completely transform their landscape. Like humans, sometimes for the worse, eventually threatening other species and themselves.

I think people often assume all of nature lives in balance, when in fact it doesn't. I think ants could teach us a lot about ourselves and our world.

I once heard a statistic that said that if you measured all the mass of land animals (anything but flora I suppose, when defining 'animal'), one tenth of the weight be be in ants alone. Considering how much one ant weighs, that's insane!

Considering you're likely looking at a chunk of former rain forest, it's already game over for the surrounding ecosystem.
