Default So I slammed the car door on my finger...

Yeah, the thread title is pretty self-explanatory. And no, I wasn't drunk.

It's pretty good and purple now. Man, I've haven't sustained many injuries so far in my life, but this is probably the worst pain I've ever felt. Got so bad at one point I felt like puking, then the excruciation gradually subsided. Now it just hurts.

I think I'm just a sissy.

Anyway, anything special I should do to it? Ice? The door cut me right below the fingernail, and that area is pretty much numb. The rest of the finger just got compressed, I guess.

RICE. Rest, ice, compression, elevation. Depending on how hard you smacked it you could get an x-ray, just to make sure there are no tiny fractures.

I feel your pain. I took my dog for pee outside. While he was running around in the back yard, I went to sit on a long patio chair. As I sat down, the leg support didn't feel right. So, I leaned over and put my hand down to brace myself so I could look under the chair. As I shifted my weight, the chair collapsed and my finger got caught in a metal bracket. If felt like I hit it really, really hard with a hammer.

So, I started shaking my hand because it hurt. After about the 3rd or so shake, I noticed a lot of blood hitting my face. I looked down and it was raw hamburger and a bone was sticking out. mmmm.

Went to the hospital to get stitched up. Found out that I was actually missing a part of my fingertip. It had apparently got stuck in the bracket, and it pulled off the skin, and with it the nail.... because they couldn't put the tip pack on, they just cut the bone down. It sounded similar to cutting your toe nails. I wanted as much length as I could spare, so they didn't fully close the wound, and it took about 4 weeks longer to heal. Thankfully, and I really do mean thankfully, the nail grew back (doc's said it wouldn't). I lost a few mm from my right middle finger, but because the nail is there, you can't tell unless you know or really examine my hands.

It didn't hurt once I got to the hospital and I didn't take any meds that day, and only had the local anesthetic in my finger when they fixed me up... but by god when that freezing wore off, that was something else. I was in agony for a good night or two. Then, it just got better, but doing regular things like closing a car door or banging it in the night was excruciating pain... not to mention that when the skin was healing, the gauze always stuck to my skin trying to regrow. So, every night, I'd have to soak my hand in warm water and pry the gauze off my mangled finger.

I was back playing hockey in I think 3-4 weeks

But, playing guitar, typing or even just opening a box is still an issue I'm trying to get used to... even picking up chip crumbs... can't do it... always falls out... haha.

Thats my story.

I did that once, almost a year ago to the day, now that I think about it.

Man that friggin' hurt - my nail turned all black, looked like I had nail-polish on for about a month and a half.

I recomend Ice, Advil-liqui gels, and red wine.

it'll help you sleep and the pain won't be so bad tomorrow.

Nah, it hurts. i don't have a cool story like I lost it in a knife fight, a bomb or something... nope.. a patio chair.. I dont think mine hurt because of the adrenaline and the pure fear (at the time) that I thought I was going to have a finger stump. Now, I'm a little more wise that I was lucky to only have a relatively minor injury.

Tylenol IIIs and whiskey make a great analgesic I find. That combo works better for me than demerol. It's more fun too. Just don't plan on operating any heavy machinery for a while, like say a can opener.

Yeah slamming your finger in a door is pretty much all-time pain in my book. I did it to my thumb this past spring and it hurt way worse than when I fell down a ravine at age nine and landed on a tree stump with my hand and then got my tooth lodged in my right middle finger as my face came down on it. That was the second worst pain ever for me, after slamming my thumb in the door.

I sincerely hope you are joking. Acetaminophen and alcohol has the potential to cause severe liver damage, and even liver death. I used to think that was bunk until I had someone tell me about it who had seen it first hand working in a hospital.
