HR Question....
Alright, this might not even be an HR related question but I figured the CP brain-trust might be able to help me out.
I work at a restaurant (Earls) full time during the summer and part time (about 20 hrs a week) during the school year. Last Tuesday I showed up to work to find that there was a plumbing problem and that the restaurant would be forced to close for a week. I probably lost about 250 dollars in wage and even more that that in tips due to the closure. I showed up today and was told that they would not be covering our wages for the week. I rely on money from work to help pay for rent, food, gas, etc... I feel really bad for the people who are working there full time right now and are out a whole weeks worth of cash. We were all told that if we would like, they could try to get us shifts at other Earls while ours would be closed. I told them I could work any night at any other restaurant while the repairs were being done. I never got any shifts at others and neither did any other serving/bartending staff....
I feel that they should be paying for our wages (not tips obviously) due to the fact that it was beyond our control. Shouldn't insurance or something cover this? I was thinking of calling the BBB but I wanted to hear what CP had to say first. It seems like there would be some sort of HR laws that deal with this kind of thing....
