This guy is dispicable.... he claims the ball is "part of his retirement fund"
Yeah yeah... you are struggling to retire.
Sounds like Mr. Sean Burke.

Glad it is all for the "love of the game", and "it isn't about the money".

The easy answer is that Major League Baseball and the Boston Red Sox own the ball and an employee lifted it from their property.
If that were the case though, how come some guy in a kayak can grab a Barry Bonds home run ball and sell it for a gazillion? And other home run balls caught INSIDE a stadium that end up as property of the fan who catches it?

What is this about Sean Burke? Is it the joke that was obviously a joke, and then someone on this board made it sound like a serious statement.... if so I strongly suggest that you findt he audio and listen to it.
Secondly he stated he would like to keep it in his family and not use it for money.I know if I was in his position I would do the exact same thing.

What, you'd take something that the whole team deserves and put it in your wife's purse then claim it as your own? You'd whine in the papers about the "hell" you went through as a second stringer?
This is like the Canucks winning the Stanley Cup and Bryan Allen taking the game puck and not giving it back because he didn't get enough icetime.

I was merely questioning the assumption that he is keeping it for monitary compensation further down the line. Do I think that he should give the ball to the hall of fame, or something like that... yes. But I won't call him dispicable for not doing so.

Well he did identify it as a "retirement fund" which would imply selling it, as owning a baseball, no matter how personally important it may be will not help one's retirement unless he chooses to sell it
edit: oh, nevermind...you were talking about Burke, weren't you...my bad. Got confused

Obviously he doesn't seem to understand the concept of a team. If anything, that ball belongs to the team and not to him.
The idea that he would need to sell the ball off so he can send his children to college is ludicrous. I just did a quick check on his career earnings to date (source: SABR - The Society for American Baseball Research) and so far his salary total comes in at $5.25 Million USD (excluding any bonuses he may have received for winning playoff series).
The guy is just a selfish person.

It seemed to me as though in the case of Burke he was making an obvious joke, which some people jumped on and attempted to use as fact regarding the viewpoint of Burke. At the same time this player did make mention that he did not intend to sell the ball, and it would stay that way not considering any unforseen circumstances.
''I hope I don't have to use it for the money. It would be cool if we have kids someday to have it stay in our family for a long time. But I can be bought. I'm thinking, there's four years at Florida State for one of my kids. At least.''
I think the guy is a poor teammate, and is a bit of a jackass, but that would really only be the case if he did sell it. I have no problem with him keeping it on a mantel at home, I know if I was in his position that is what I would do

You would be a bit of a jackass and a bad teammate if you had the chance?

I'm torn on this one. I bet Joe Carter owns the baseball he caught at first base when the Jays won the World Series. The pitcher alot of times keeps the game ball, or the fielder who catches the ball for the last out. I can't fault this guy for wanting to keep this one.

luckily for the Canucks, they'll never have to be in that scenario.

Looks from the story that there's some updated info.
I was just about to write that you never know how the questions are worded, or how he said was taken out of context to make him look worse then he is.
If he sells it for $$ to some private person, he's an idiot and a liar and all the other bad words he's been called..
If he keeps it, but agrees to loan it out to the Red Sox for a few months each year so Red Sox fans can push their noses up to the glass and see it (like he says he'd probably do on the radio in the updated portion), I think its fine that he actually retains ownership.
