Have to have your employeer fill out a Record of Employment. This just states that you where working and got laid off. The employeer has to give a reason for the layoff, as well as the number of hours that you have worked etc.
You need to have a set # of hours worked before you can claim EI.
When I tried this a few years ago, I was about 50 hours short. If you are short on hours, you can file an appeal if you so wish.
I think if I remember correctly, the minimun you have to work in a year is about 930 hours.
If your wife is only off for a couple months, I don't think it would be worth the hassle. Plus it takes about 6-8 weeks before you start collecting anyway. And if you have to appeal, tack on a few more weeks at least.
