Flames make major deal
Flames GM Walsh announced early Sunday morning that the Flames have traded goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff to the the New York Islanders. In return, the Flames receive goalie Cam Ward, defenceman Dan Girardi, and forward Travis Moen.
Kipper is a great goaltender but has really struggled for us so far this season. We are a team that lacks depth and this move gives a starting goalie plus 2 skaters in return which should help.
Cam Ward is an excellent goalie who should continue to get better, and he has something in the NHL that Kipper doesn't...a Stanley Cup .
Dan Girardi is a very good young defenceman. We feel he will continue to developing and become even better.
Travis Moen is a depth player at best but he should help on the pk and his salary makes him a good player for this team.
Also included in this deal sees the Flames and Isles swapping 3rd round picks and a boat load of cap to the Isles. Thanks to Kev for being patient, it was not easy trading away my favorite player but in the end the CPHL Flames should be better off.
Flame away.

Deal breaks down as follows:
To Calgary Flames:
Cam Ward (G)
Daniel Girardi (D)
Travis Moen (F)
2010 3rd Round Pick
To New York Islanders:
Miikka Kiprusoff (G)
$3.9M
2009 3rd Round Pick
Why we did this:
In our opinion, we acquired an elite-level goaltender today. We did give up a much younger goalie in the deal, but we do not believe that Ward and Kiprusoff are in the same tier of goalies in the NHL. Kiprusoff is in the highest tier among NHL goalies along with guys like Luongo, Lundqvist, Nabokov, Garon, etc. while Ward is probably in the next tier below with guys like Vokoun, Lehtonen, etc.
You have to give to get, and today we got one of the best goalies in the game (despite what the majority on CP may think after less than 10 games played!), but we did have to give up three assets in order to make the deal work.
Also, this is the type of deal I've been looking to make for a while now since every other aspect of the team has been shaken up seriously in the past without producing the type of results we're looking for. The only constant throughout all the moves has been Cam Ward.
Cheers to Mike for being a good sport throughout the negotiations and we're actually very confident that this deal ends up working for both teams nicely, giving us a true number one goalie finally, while giving the CPHL Flames some much needed depth throughout their roster adding two contributors to their lineup without giving up any one.

As much as I hate to say it (cuz I would have looooved kipper), this trade seems to work well for both squads. Flames badly needed depth and they got it adding a few good young players. Isles make a move that with their D core should really bolster their chances at making the playoffs. Well done gents!

Hey Kev, just to remind you, that 3rd rounder is mine!
Even deal all the way around I think. Goalies are tough to trade in the league so well done guys.

Yea pretty good deal for both teams. Kipper is a class above Ward but we've seen teams perform well in the sim regardless of their goalie. So who knows, maybe Ward will be better for Calgary than Kipper was anyway. And Girardi is a nice pickup, he's a good player.

That's the only reason I kept asking Mike for his 3rd!

That is a huge deal. I think that the Flames did well here, once you take the emotional side of the deal out of things. Ward is a good goalie and I think that the return was fair here.

Pretty even deal now as Kev desperately needed a shakeup and Ward is a good young goalie for the Flames. The only low point I see is that the Isles keep getting older and are yet to make the playoffs with the current crop. I think this is a do or die year fro Kev as if he can't get it done this year it will be time to blow it up and rebuild.
