I am very aggitated right now. I just spent the last three hours driving from Westhills, to downtown, to Market Mall, to Lakeview and back to Westhills.
I did not even see one snow plow or sanding truck! :mad2: Bow trail, Crowchild, and Glenmore are major roads that should be kept clear of snow, slush and any other debris.
Is there no longer any money budgeted for snow removal in our city budget? It seems all winter that snow removal has been abismal. I cant take it anymore.
Not only do you have to deal with poor drivers that are still using worn out summer tires, but now you have to deal with those same people trying to drive through 6 inch ridges of snow on every road. Argh!
Does anyone know why the snow removal has become so bad over the past few years?

Probably because it's only been snowing for a couple of hours and there are a lot of major roads in Calgary that can't all be cleared at once. Such as Deefoot, 16th Ave, Blackfoot, whatever else you want to name. I understand your aggrivation but you can't expect the city to get every road in the city snow free the instant the snow falls. And yes I know that the roads were bad over the weekend and into the early week, but really, they were snow free and relatively well sanded, but when it goes from 10 deg to -25 in a day or two, there isn't much you can do to keep the roads from becomming icy messes.
People just need to learn to slow down and give the guy in front of them some room.

I agree that sometimes you cant do much. But I've noticed a general trend of poor snow removal in this city lately. Richmond Road (for example) was still not plowed yesterday from the snowfall last week.
Something has changed with our snow removal program. It totally sucks when compared to say 5 years ago.
It was bad last year too. In that article from last year, Bronconnier said he would make it better this year, but hasnt, IMO.
I have been driving in this city for over 15 years, and as of lately, it gets worse every year.

Probably because the city keeps doubling in area every 2 years with it's brilliant foresight. [/b][/quote]
bingo.
welcome to the suburban "dream". the bigger the city gets geographically, the more stretched its infrastructure, and with people too stretched out to pay their fair share, new communities have to be subsidized. But unfortunately, its not the new communities who who have to pay for all these needs, but its the old ones in the inner city who tend to have the least impact. It's ass-backwards.

Is that different than years past?
I am still convinced it is not as good as it used to be. I think there needs to be more snow removal (not just sanding) in "Priority Two". Perhaps in the past, there was a higher emphasis on removal.
The urban sprawl is a good point, as mentioned above. One more reason to quit building those massive outdoor mall complexes... such a waste of space. But, that is a rant for another day.

LOL, your right!
NO wonder it is so bad now, they likely have NO schedule!
So that schedule (I seem to remember) worked OK. The real question then is, what do they do now? I have a distinct impression of it being better back 4-5 or more years ago.

Interesting, I didn't know that. I guess it kind of makes sense. Though I wonder if there is actually government snow ploughs in the city that do it or if the city ones do it and the city just charges the province.

I guess I've never really noticed, because the whole time I've been in Calgary I've lived at the west end of either 16th or Crowchild and they're both pretty high priority roads so they'll get done no matter what the conditions or snow removal policy. I suppose if I lived in areas that aren't as high a priority I might notice a difference. I'll just have to take your word for it.

Well, it was backed up from 24th (?) (McMahon) almost to Bow Trail at 2 pm. I was luckily heading south.
By the time downtown starts exiting through that mess of convuluted entries and exits at Bow Trail, I would be that Crowchild is totally stopped.
If you can work late, and get paid extra for it, go that route and leave for home at 8 pm.

Yeah, Deerfoot is Alberta's problem. However, the government doesnt do the work. The work is contracted out to Carmack's. Deerfoot seems to be taken care of nicely actually.
I learned this earlier this afternoon while reading through that City of Calgary site that mileflames linked to.

Cool good to know. Kinda ironic that the best kept street is the one with a speed limit that you'd have to be ######ed to do on a day like today.

But isn't it interesting that a private contractor can do the job better than what the City of Calgary does. Why do we pay them so much for sub-standard service. Let's just get rid of them all and contract the street clearing work out.
