Default BPA, Water Bottles, and You

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servl...Story/National

According to this story, Canada could be the first country to label BPA as a dangerous substance. That initial decision could come as early as today.

Bisphenol A, or BPA, is one of the most widely used synthetic chemicals in modern industry. It is the basic building block for polycarbonate, the see-through, shatter-proof plastic that resembles glass, and is also used to make the epoxy resins lining the insides of most tin cans, along with some dental sealants, sports helmets, and compact discs.

BPA is commonly found in water bottles and baby bottles. All you that carry around an old Nalgene water bottle and the plethora of new parents on CP would do well to check your containers for BPA. It's sometimes identified with a 7 in a triangle with PC written nearby.

I'm not usually one to over react to things like this. Seems like every day there's something new out there that will give you cancer. Whether you believe the studies or not, many retailers across Canada have already pulled these products from their shelves. Health Canada's expected moves will be precedent-setting on the international stage. I can already hear the class action lawyers rubbing their hands together in anticipation.

I told you not to drink bottled water.

Evian spelled backwards is naive.

It goes beyond bottled water though. BPA is probably in those giant water cooler jugs but it's also in your old Nalgene bottles everyone and their dog uses at the gym. Those things are ubiquitous at the University at least. For a while it was a big deal to get rid of glass baby bottles.

Plastic bottles were the wave of the future. Well now that future is full of synthetic estrogen. It's entirely possible that my man boobs are a result of me trying to drink more water and not my otherwise sloth-like physical exercise regimen.

So what would they do for cups at the Dining Centre at the UofC? Tin cups? Surely they wouldn't permit real glass anywhere near the resident hooligans.

I've recently picked up a few of the metal ones.. or whatever they're made of.

Other than. . . Ummm, they make a loud noise when I drop it, they're not all that bad. Well I can't find one as big as my old 1.5+L Nalgene.

Pretty hard to change though. We have those big coolers @ work.
I eat out of a lot of plastic bowls because I can't fit all my food on a normal dinner plate. etc.

Someone's gotta be making a ton of money off of this. MEC is often sold out of those metal ones.

BPA class actions already filed in California, like, a year ago?

Checked my water bottle that I use frequently and it has a 5 in a triangle with PP underneath. It should be save for a year or two untill they discover that it leads to brain damage.

It's just the clear or transparent plastic dishes right? For the most part solid and opaque containers are all good. Or at least that's my understanding.

How bout those ziploc container thingies?

I would hope that with all this torch waving that someone somewhere along the line actually did some standard tests on the normal drinking water. I wonder exactly how much synthetic estrogen and the like we're getting from the water regardless of the container it was stored in?

Here is a paper about that:

http://www.springerlink.com/content/w622827xjqg6wp85/

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases...0417114749.htm

http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/il...en-pollut.html

Why is everything so quiet when it comes to negative impacts of contraceptives? The UK Environment Agency confirmed the contraceptive pill as a pollutant back in 2002. The Agency warned then that fish stocks in British rivers were showing signs of gender ambiguity as a result of high levels of estrogen in the water. A survey of 1,500 fish at 50 river sites found more than a third of males also displayed female characteristics.

MEC pulled all of their old #7 Nalgene bottles months ago. I recycled mine and got a #2 one.

It's kinda funny when something that has been known for a long time suddenly makes the news and magically the freakout begins. That's not a knock on any group of people, just a fact of society that is slightly amusing, not to mention predictable.

Yeah - it is funny. But... there are so many bad things, that turn out to not be bad, or not really bad enough, or... good, or not good enough.

You could pretty much spend an entire lifetime changing things based on what you hear is good/and bad for you and never get it right.

So - if by the time I need a new bottle, the former ones are no longer there - then fine, I'll grab the metal one and consider me reformed.
