yeah, I've done it. So we can get some "us" time. My son was a year and a half old at the time.

Have never done it (no close family nearby), although something like Vegas or an overseas friend's wedding would be examples of where I would consider it.
In them cases I would be leaving the kids with my wife.
Went for a meal, cinema and drinks on Sat night and that was an occasion

I watched my nephews for about a week with my mom while my brother went on his honeymoon. I've also watched them for a weekend here and there. Having two little hellraisers running around doesn't allow for a lot of down time. This allows them to get away and spares them their sanity.

My parents would leave us with the grandparents all the time. I plan on doing it to my kids as well. As much as I'll love my kids, everyone needs a break every now and then

Some of my best childhood memories are when Grandma would come and stay with us. We would have a week getting spoiled followed by getting presents when my parents got home. Plus two trips to the airport to play the "whirrly Helicopter" game. (Winnipeg Airport.)

We went to Vegas at the end of August for five days. Which marks the longest I've been away from my kids (daughter age 4 and son age 6 months) ever. It was a great, relaxing trip and the kids had fun at their aunts house. By the end of the trip I really missed them and my son was acting pretty strange towards me. He cried everytime I tried to hold him the night we got back. Probably had something to do with the scent of cheap cigars and 5 days of booze wafting off me though.

My parents never went on a long vacation without us (say for a week) but yes many weekends we'd go to grandma and grandpa's while mom and dad had some time for themselves. I used to love it, it was my own mini-vacation, and opportunity to get spoiled and stay up later than normal.

we had the same thing, Mom and Dad would go to Vegas or wherever, we'd get to go to the farm and visit my grandparents and had a blast.

Of course! No better recharging the relationship time than dumping the kids on relatives for a week or two. You get over the sadness after the second Marguerita!
Weve done it quite a few times....we've also taken the kids on some excellent vacations.
Of course if you dump your kids with someone else who has kids it will be a tit for tat thang...so grandparents are always the best thing followed closely by the unmarried uncles or aunts.

We usually only do the jaunt to Vegas when we leave our kids at home.
but ya, wifey and I need our "us" time.
there's nothing wrong with it and they will appreciate you more when you come home relaxed and rested.

Yeah, but Cheese and Sample need us time because when your 100 years old (combined) those blue pills need to activate, and you need to be able to make use of that time when they're working.

My parents never took a vacation without me (before I was 14 or so), but I did stay at my uncle's place one summer for about a week.
My wife and I have twice gone to Vegas and left our oldest son with her parents. The first time was for 3 nights, the next was for an entire week. We plan to do it again when our 2nd son is about 18 months (the same age our oldest son was when we first went to Vegas).
We plan to take family vacations with our kids when they are older. Right now, having young kids that require your constant attention we felt it good to take a break. The 1st trip was planned, the 2nd wasn't planned to be a vacation, it just worked out that I got to go to a conference in Vegas and was able to bring my wife with me. The trips were only 6 months apart.

I've gone away for weekends without kids. Or, let the grandparents take the kids for a vacation for a week. One of my other favorites is leaving the kids with my husband and taking off for an extended girls weekend. In fact, I'm going to Vegas Thursday with the girls for fun and hockey. My kids will be safe with their dad.

Taking vacations without young kids (especially on planes) should be mandatory.
There's nothing worse than being stuck sitting beside a bunch of snot-nosed little brats for 4 hours.
