Well the Americans lead after day one which is rare. There's no I in team, but there is in Tiger!!!! Maybe they'll have some team chemistry without him around, that the Americans always seem to lack when they play the Europeans. IIRC Europe is fielding a pretty good team this year too.

I think Azinger did a great job by bringing in a few of the younger guys. Some of the older, more established guys don't seem to be very concerned with the Ryder Cup and almost seem they don't want to be there.
Perry obviously wanted to be there, especially since it's in Kentucky. Leonard has proven his mettle in the past, and Furyk is a gritty player. Mickelson is the only one I really question. I just don't think his heart is in it.

What makes you say that?
Is it his constant fist pumping and smiling? His constant encouraging and chatting with Kim? or the fact that he played as well as anyone yesterday and would have won both matches had Kim not flubbed the bunker shot on 18?

Usually I pull for the Euro squad, but I don't think I can cheer for Ian Poulter, though he seems to be backing up his mouth with some of his play today.

I think playing with Anthony Kim has really brought out the enthusiasm in Phil.

Karlsson was ridiculous, 7 birdies in the last 10 holes, crazy.

Looking earlier, and without accounting for any halved matches, I gave the Europe the victory tomorrow with an 8-4 day. We'll see.

Just a hunch...
Going into the Ryder Cup, I just had a feeling that if there was going to be a weak link, it was going to be one of the more established U.S. players. I thought Phil was going to be the guy.
Pairing him with Kim was a good decision, and it seems to be paying off.

I think this European team was pretty overrated coming into this tournament and that they seem to have taken an old American approach that they just have to show up to win the Cup.
The Americans are the ones who seem to be playing with the usual European "grit" and "teamwork" this year.
The Americans are easily just as or probably more talented individually and if they play as well as they can should easily take the Cup back this year.
I predict a 7-5 US win today and them winning the Ryder Cup.

gotta love Boo Weekley:
One Friday night when I was 16, a bunch of us went to the county fair. A truck pulled in there, sort of away from the midway, and we watched a guy get out and put together a big cage he had in the bed of the truck. After he got the cage together, he put up a little table. Then he went to the cab of the truck and brings out an orangutan. He starts yelling: "Five to win fifty! Who can beat the orangutan? Pay $5 to try and get $50 if you can whip him!"
We'd never seen anything like that before. We decided that one of us had to try, and I drew the short straw. Five of us put up a buck each, and I gave the guy with the truck $5. Before helping me into the boxing gloves and headgear, he made me sign a waiver. Looking back, that was a bad sign.
I got in the ring. The orangutan didn't look like much. He came up about to my chest, though his arms were as long as he was tall. When the match started, he didn't lift his arms. He kept them down at his side and used them to pivot and follow me as I circled him like Muhammad Ali. I just didn't see how I could miss. My strategy was to fake with my right hand, and when the orangutan tried to block the punch, I'd throw my left.
My buddies were going wild. "Get him, Boo! Kick his butt!" They really wanted that $50. I moved in close and faked with my right, and that's the last thing I remember. I woke up bleeding in the back of a friend's pickup. The orangutan had knocked me cold with one punch, which I didn't even see coming. My friends thought it was hilarious. They said I had a glass jaw and called me "Glassy" the rest of the night.
After I came to, we watched this orangutan knock out guy after guy. Not one guy could lay a glove on him. He had reflexes like a cat, and later I learned that an orangutan can tear a guy's arm off.
I've always half-denied this story -- even though I was a kid and it happened almost 20 years ago, I can see the animal-rights people protesting. I don't think orangutan fighting goes on anymore, which is a good thing. It probably wasn't fair for the orangutan, and it sure as heck wasn't good for me. The only winner was the guy driving the truck.

That's awesome, lol.
This is some amazing golf already today. I have underestimated the Americans. Anthony Kim is quickly becoming a favorite of mine.

meh....
this year just didn't have the venom that used to make the ryder cup so enjoyable. The crowd was pro US but the players just didn't hate each other.
Hopefully that ends next time. This is usuallyl the best golf you get.

Yeah, other than Weekley v. Westwood, there wasn't really any hate, and that was tame itself. Even the Captains were a little too nice to each other. I love seeing drama like that, and you're right, there was virtually none here.
But I thought the golf was great, and Sunday wasn't all that lopsided which made it pretty exciting until pretty close to the end.
