Email- Leave a copy on the Server
OK, new spin on this question that has come up before. As many of us know, there is an option within Outlook/ Outlook Express to leave a copy of your email on the server. So as an example, this means if I use Telus for my email I can see the email through Webmail as well as using Outlook.
So, here's my problem. I was setting up a new computer for somebody yesterday, and they failed to tell me (or I failed to ask depending on your point of view) that they had their email set to leave a copy on the server. So once I set up their email it grabbed several hundred emails and they now only exist in their Outlook.
Does anybody know how to get the emails back on Telus' system, or are they SOL?
Next question, how many of you leave your email with a copy on the server like in this instance? I thought it was pretty rare.
And finally, does anybody know of a good utlity that will allow Netscape mail to be exported into Outlook or OE? I have copied the email over, but OE doesn't recognize it as being Netscape mail.

I never do it for POP accounts like Shaw or Telus. The have incredibly small size quotas, and it causes me to miss emails. In fact, I'm starting to move away from using my Shaw email account now. They make it so damned unfriendly, that it's just pointless to use it. Small mailbox, no external SMTP service, blocked ports, etc etc.
I do it for IMAP accounts like GMAIL, though.
I pretty much just stick with GMAIL and my MobileME account now.
Edit: Whoops, as for the first question... I believe you're SOL. You can always phone Telus, but I'm pretty sure they won't do anything.

I don't think you can put the email "back", short of mailing it back to yourself.
I actually use this method - I have my laptop leave a copy on the server and my desktop receive the email. Then I only archive from my desktop. I also use GMail and have it leave copies on the server. Then I always have access to my email and have a much more handy interface than webmail (some webmail interfaces are far from user friendly or efficient)
And we have quite a few people at work do this, especially manager who have laptops and Blackberry/iPhones so they always have one place where they can look for old email instead of searching through each appliance.

You can't get the emails back there... SOL
Like Fan said, it gets a little sketchy using this method, but lots of people do it. I've found a more reliable setup is forwarding to a second account if you are trying to get emails in 2 places..

And this is pretty much the only time I have used this; somebody has a laptop so when they are on the road they can get their email, but once they get back home it goes to their desktop. This person was not the type to have multiple computers; heck the one we were upgrading him from yesterday was a Win98 box with 32MB of RAM- and did I mention he was also still using Netscape?

Hey, I used Netscape......10 years ago.
Why does he want to put the email back? It sounds more like he had no idea it was set up that way.

I think you can EXPORT mail out of netscape into a more.."Importable" format.. if not I believe the mozilla mail client can import and export it as a go between...

He wants it back because he actually had no idea that there was different ways of setting things. He just figured that Webmail was like a window onto your mail program.

there are occassions when you can get it back. if you have an exchange server set up and then at home have to log in as pop3 and it dl's everything, you can get it to put things back. i once accidentally didn't check the box and though i lost all my work emails onto my home pc. but as able to get it to sync back up with the exchange server. but i dont think that applies here. sorry for the worthless advice!
