Default Peigan/Barlow/Deerfoot Interchange

Wow.

http://www.transportation.alberta.ca...provements.pdf

It's about time they did something about the sh*tshow that is the Peigan yield sign to Deerfoot south. I must have been in a complete daze to not have noticed that construction is underway there. I suppose it's because I avoid the area like The Plague after having worked in the industrial area south of 50th and getting caught at that rail crossing sometimes for upwards of an hour.
That's another thing. I can't believe how often I hear the traffic reports on the radio talking about major delays there because a friggin train is poking along across Barlow in rush hour. Super frustrating.

So when are they ever going to connect Barlow to Barlow?

Right around the time they connect Sarcee with Sarcee.

It has to be that big, or they would have had to rebuild the bridge over deerfoot, plus they want to make the new merge lane as long as possible.

Plus I can see the loop being that big to accomodate trucks.

As for Barlow connecting to Barlow, I didn't live here at the time, but didn't they used to connect, and then they used part of Barlow to build Deerfoot?

Barlow trail is going to become three different roads before it becomes one road, unless the part north of the airport gets renamed.

Isn't it 3 different roads already? Barlow south, Barlow that leads to the airport from the south and Barlow that goes from Country Hills Blvd to the Airport?

Well, it's all the same road, it just turns a corner there by the airport. There are other roads in Calgary (such as Northmount Drive) that do the same.

Until the Barlow from McKnight to the airport gets replaced with a new runway.

Then there will be 3 sections called Barlow.

So looking at that.. looks like they are going to improve flow to and from that area, only to be stopped by traffic lights. So essentially fixing nothing. It's still going to a show.

If they remove the lights, and make it a fly over type thing, it would work much better.

I curse the civil engineers and their love of traffic lights!

To be fair, at least there are alot more lanes so that more traffic gets through each time the lights turn green.

The people I curse are the sadistic bastids that gleefully sychronize stretches of lights so that you hit red after red after red.

As part of the "green initiative" it's a dual-use facility. In the off hours Secretariat is going to train there.

I blame the traffic lights and secondly the truck drivers, nothing against them but there is too many at rush hour and they take forever to get to speed. I just had to vent.

They should have made it the size of the Southland to Northbound Deerfoot loop - then you go only do 30 km/h around it and merge at the proper Deerfoot merging speed of 50km/h.

The main trouble at that exit is trucks that exit Deerfoot, North or South, and have to stop at Peigan and Barlow. They are removing those lights, so a truck coming up the ramp will not have to stop until 50th where traffic volume will be reduced by everything that exits to Peigan / into the Road King and/or 50th Ave westbound.

It will help tons, don't kid yourself.

Edit: WAIT, after a second look it seems they are KEEPING the lights at Peigan/Barlow????

Man..that loop ain't gonna be cheap either. That thing looks like it'll be elevated for the majority of the loop to get over the pathway TWICE, while the ground slopes towards the reservoir. Probably one big structure. Assuming that loop is around 1000 m all the way around, you're looking at a $50M structure. BLING!

Because, of course, that is the only possible alternative.

Lol, there must have been a better way to do that loop, surely building new bridge over Deerfoot would have cost less than that whole loop.

That loop's gonna add 5 minutes to my commute!

I'll be glad when this is done, I accidentally used Peigan the other day and it took me half an hour just to get from 52nd to Deerfoot

As with all road improvements, it has to get worse to get better.
