Personally, I dont care about either the Wii or the NHL 2K series but I
stumbled across this on Gamespot.com and thought people who do would be interested in knowing about it.

I have always played the EA games, and have never touched the 2k series games. That will soon change I guess.

One thing about the 2k games is they have awesome multiplayer mini games. This should go well with the wii.

Not a huge fan of the 2K series, but I'll definately be picking this game up. Since the Wii first came out, I've wanted them to come out with an NHL game for it, and finally they did.

I've never played a 2K Sports title. I was among the throngs of diehards loyal to the EA Sports NHL brand since it first came out on the SNES. Obviously, I've favored Nintendo products over that time too and have enjoyed the series for quite a while on the PC as well.

Since about 2005 EA Sports has forsaken me. Their PC NHL offering was a horrible after-thought retread of seasons past with updated rosters and little more. They stopped making games for the GameCube and have not made any indication that games for the Wii are coming (at least for hockey).

I am eagerly anticipating NHL 2K9.

Just read this on nintendowiifanboy.com. Great news! I'm going to still buy NHL 2009 for the xbox 360, but now I will have to buy this as well.

I really hope they utilize the controller for stick handling.

Do the Playstation 3 and XBox 360 allow internet play?

Do they allow internet play between each other?

It would be good if you could have a friend with PC, another with
PS3, another with XBox and then finally one with a Wii all play
together.

Unfortunately it doesn't work that way. The online structure of the ps3 and 360 are completely different which wouldn't allow for cross-platform online play. Throwing the pc and wii versions in there would further complicate things as they are completely different games. That's assuming the pc sticks with the trend and continues to be a borked ps2 port.

Article from Nintendo Wii Fanboy from E3 demonstrating NHL2K on the Wii. The 2K Sports rep is painful to listen to. Apparently, this year is all about fun. You can drive the zamboni during intermissions, players grow beards when the playoffs start and, if you win the cup, you get to interact with the players and skate around kissing the cup and stuff. I hope the first true hockey game on the wii isn't too wii-ified.

The person who previewed the game for IGN this week seemed to be underwhelmed to me, but did say they didn't get to see much. Which in itself is odd as the game is supposed to be released in 6 weeks.

On the other hand, the previews of NHL 09 all point to an improved version of NHL 08 which IGN deemed the best sports game of the year.

I played the EA series for years and then switched to the 2k series for a number of years. After getting sick of no real advancement in the game (or fixing of recurring bugs!) I went back to EA for NHL 07. That was a decent game but not great. I think they nailed NHL 08 and in particular the control scheme which seemed so intuitive after a few games.

The 2k series was actually better than EA's in the last generation..it was a really solid hockey title. But this generation, they have really lost it..doesn't seem to have progressed much, while EA's game has become outstanding.

Good for Wii owners though, you finally get hockey of some sort.

question bout the zamboni, if you screw up one end on purpose on cleaning the ice.. does it keep it over the next period so that part of the ice is bad to turn in your favour?

Not sure I like what I hear in terms of passing. In Madden on the Wii, do you select your targets by clicking on them like this? Seems to me it might be slower than simply hitting a direction and clicking a button to pass.

it has both modes, you can use the regular direction + pass (a button or w/e it is) but must be looking towards the player, the wiimote passing is more accurate and allows you to send the pass forward of the player.

From the reaction to Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 for the Wii I'd expect the precision passing to be a huge addition to hockey games. I haven't played PES:2008, but every impression and review online says that the pointer passing controls are a huge innovation and add a ton to the game.
