Anyone here know about Cargo Trailers?
I'm looking to buy a Cargo Trailer, something along the lines of a tandem axle 7x16' or 8x16'.
My Truck says it has 6600lbs GVW and 500lb hitch weight.
Anyone here know about such things, and even where a good place to buy one in or around Calgary would be. Google turn up alot of results but they all look like rebranded sites of the same site. kijiji shows some stuff but I figured I'd ask if there are any people here in the know!

What's the weight of the truck+passengers and other cargo in the truck itself?
How much weight do you need to haul? What kind of truck is this? Is this an enclosed cargo trailer or a flatdeck?
Is there a GCWR or GTWR listed?

The Truck is only a 1/2 ton Chev... I'd only be moving typical house stuff.. couch, tables, chairs.... nothing major.
The truck used to be used for towing a large boat, has the brake controller on it, and all set up for towing. The hitch is the kind that takes the 2" square inserts. I think the Hitch can handle way more then the truck can.
The truck won't be doing much more then carrying a couple adults and a couple kids, mostly just pulling the weight of the trailer.
I think the GVW of the truck is 6600lbs...
I'm a complete noob at this stuff, so I'm trying not to get suckered into 12,000.00 trailer that I can't pull....

I watch this thread with interest as I have just purchased a truck that is rated for towing up to 6500lbs. I have nothing to contribute as far as answering your question is concerned, but I have a question for you... You're looking at buying a $12,000 trailer to move house stuff? Are you moving across the country or something?

I might have a line on one for sale.
I think it is about 8 X 12 tandem axle; very solid. Generally has been used to haul quads, but has also hauled an older model (heavy'ish) car. Is flat bed with racks for front and sides (about 3 ft tall).
I can get more details if you are serious.

If you're going to get anywhere close to your towing limit, your truck better have a transmission cooling system. Especially if you're heading west through the mountains.
Household items are relatively light. Even appliances. The bulk of your weight will be the actual trailer. My bro in law is a concrete guy and he hauls around a 20 footer with a bobcat, a spare bucket and rebar on it with his 3/4 ton GMC. I can't remember what he figures his trailer weighs without the bobcat and stuff on it, but it was 2000 or less (I think).
It's a tandem axle with a solid deck on it... Even if it's 2500lbs, there's no way you'd load more than 2000lbs on top of that. That'd keep you at or under 4500 lbs.
For the record, $12,000 sounds like alot for a 16 footer. Should be more like 5-9 grand for a good one. If you shopped around, I bet you'd find an older one for 3 or 4. Replace some planks, new tires and a coat of paint and the thing is new again.

It just occurred to me that your version of a cargo trailer might be different from mine. I'm thinking of a flat deck. Since you're moving, you're probably thinking of an enclosed type. I withdraw my previous comment about prices. I've never even looked at prices for enclosed trailers.

Yeah, I'm looking for the enclosed type. The truck is setup with a transmisson cooler, and all the towing stuff. The guy who had it before me pulled a large boat with it so I know the truck and pull stuff.
I've been researching prices, used and retail and they seem to vary between.. 6500... and 9000. I just hate walking into places and saying...."What do I need?".....
Does anyone know a "reputable" dealer for these things?

If you ever pass through Red Deer there are a ton of dealers here. I would imagine there's lots in Calgary though, just don't know of any.

The drive to Red Deer wouldn't be a problem for the right price...
Seems to be LOTS of 10 and 12' for sale.. 16's seem hard to come by. I don't want a trailer thats too big to pull because I can JAM to much stuff into it... but I also don't want it too small to be useful..
This whole thing seems alot more compicated then it should be... it's just some aluminum on wheels....
I'm gonna ask the google oracle about trailers in Red Deer...

Why don't you just rent one? Or do you plan on using it for more than the one move?

I don't really plan on using it for much more then the move.. but from what I've seen they hold thier value pretty well.. so I could use it for storage when I get where I'm going, and then sell it for basically what I paid for it.
Plus renting is EXPENSIVE... most of the things I found to rent were smaller, and they wanted to charge me like WOAH.. for leaving the trailer 4000km away from where I picked it up... It just seemed more economical to buy it, use it as storage for a while, then sell it later.

If your moving for work, your moving expenses will be a right off. Can you right off the purchase of a trailer versus the rental of a trailer?

Not gonna be a write off..
I'm leaving on my own, rode out the boom here... Buying oursleves a few acres and a small house... Quiting my good job here, and my wife and I are taking the oppertunity to each start our own small buisiness. Gonna show the kids there is more to life then concrete, pavement and cultural events...
All I need now is a way to move my junk... at least some of it... we've already given away / sold most of the "extra" stuff..

Yeah.. it's quite a change for sure.. but nothing if not an adventure..
We could be back in a few years.. or somewhere else or still there... who knows... but in the mean time we're gonna try our hand at spending more time with our boys and running out business's.
We love calgary.. been here for 14 years, just wanna experience something different...
We are taking are our couches, table, TV, beds... Clothes, some toys, dishes, quad... ROFL... typical house house stuff nothing "MAJOR"... I'm hoping to fit all that in said trailer...
