<insert "good riddance" newfie joke here>
their economy seems to be picking up, aquaculture and offshore oil mean that the st. john's u-haul franchise will finally get some trucks back.
it'd be a shame to lose them now, someone's got to help us pay for quebec. if newfoundland left and quebec left, where would we get the strippers we need?

They are asking for the same deal Alberta got when we went from a have-not to a have province. I'm not sure why we should oppose them in that.
I have no idea why the feds want to keep provinces in the gutter, but in this case, the transfer payments can be used to help a province get out of the gutter, and into a postion of self sustainablity. In the end, that is good for Alberta, and all of Canada, as we will be paying for one less province in the equalization system.
Nevermind that this is also a case of the Federal Liberals once again reneging on a promise. Quite frankly, anyone who opposes Martin and his cronies deserves our support.
Go Newfoundland Go.

Good call Snakeeye. They are looking for the same deal that we are getting and it was promised to them. I'd be p*ssed off too. Although I don't really agree with the idea of liking someone just because they oppose the liberals, I definately think that most Albertans should be in full support of NFLD in this case.

From a few articles back..
"Ottawa is offering an eight-year deal that would give the province 100 per cent of offshore oil revenues.
But it would include a cap to keep Newfoundland and Labrador from surpassing the per capita tax revenue of Ontario. "
Sounds reasonable to me. Lets see... who benefits the most from equalization payments? Want to walk away from that hand that feeds you? Why shouldn't you have your welfare cut once you have a means of sustaining yourself? Fact is, you need us more than we need you. Most of those East Coast oil and gas plays are not panning out, don't think this is going to be a huge bonanza like it is for Alberta...
Bravo to the feds for standing up to renegade provinces.... now if it would only do that to all of them....

Any province that stands up to those crooks in Ottawa has my full support. Go Newfoundland go!!! The Liberal government would just loose or misplace that billion dollars anyway, just like all the other billions of dollars they slipped to their secret buddies and relatives.
Of course, their taking all this money from us for our own good since we're obviously too stupid to figure out how to spend such large sums of money. :wwf:

With Fotze on this one. With Four Billion in revenue wouldn't that pretty much get rid of their deficit anyway? It's not like their is a ton of people living there, and that's only ONE source of revenue. Then they have no need for equalization payments.
But I have heard that province who have long been receiving eqaulization payments (esp Quebec) make sure they spend all of their revenue so they can still run a deficit and still get money from the government. So in effect we are paying to put parks in their cities and pave their roads. They get the extras, because they are spending their revenues without balancing their budgets first.

I think that is the big game of confederation. There is no incentive to balance out the books and be fiscally responsible, if you do then you won't get the extra money from 'have' provinces. Its called milking the system.
note: I don't know for SURE this is what is happening, but it makes me mad to even think about it

I'd prefer it if Newfoundland kept the money because the Federal Liberals are just going turn around and give those billion dollars to their fellow pork barrelling buddies and to Quebec.

Too bad we hadn't voted in the alliance 5 years ago instead, eh?
A 61c dollar forever
Bogged down in Iraq, still looking for WMD Harper insisted must be there.
Doctor visits costing more then dentist visits.
Shame over everything 'Canadian' and only rose glasses about everything American.... 13 new states almost wrapped and delivered...
Go team Neo-Conservative!
:P
Seriously though, so you think the Liberals SHOULD pay equalization AND give oil revenues to Newfoundland? You are p*ssed they are trying to protect the public purse? Or the liberal bashing is just habitual and you really didn't think about the issue, you just did the red-neck thing and bashed without thought?

What party was in charge the last time we had a 61 c dollar? And who was the finance minister?
At least, with a Conservative government, we would still have a democracy instead of being governed by the Supreme Court and a gutless wonder who can talk for a hour, spew out thousands of words, and say nothing.
Oh by the way . . . Merry Christmas to the Prime Minister and may God bless him! :innocent:
I think Newfoundland should get the same arrangement Alberta has right now. There's a reason why the Liberals are always dreaming up new schemes, like the infamous National Energy Program (NEP) and the soon to be famous Carbon tax on oil (under the pretense of complying with the Kyoto Protocol), in order to claw back some of the money Alberta gets. I'd be very surprised the Federal government is being very honest about what they're offering Newfoundland.
As for the equalization grants . . . has Newfoundland asked to keep them or are they concerned about claw backs the Federal government will use to give more money to Quebec while Newfoundland remains poor?
Let's not forget the WONDERFUL Hydro Electric agreement the Federal Liberals worked out for Quebec a few decades ago that saw money pouring into Quebec for hydro produced in Laborador simply because the power lines passed through Quebec.
Liberal bashing? I'm just trying to open your eyes to the embarrassment we have representing us in Ottawa and how they're using our hard-earned money for their own personal gain.
Let's face it, The liberals don't care about Alberta or Newfoundland . . . as a matter of fact . . . they don't even care about Quebec or Ontario. They certainly don't care about the people of Canada. They only care about themselves and staying in power. They will lie, cheat, and steal to maintain their position. They are totally unprincipled.
But . . . to tell you the truth . . . politics bores me and I have no strong feelings one way or the other about how we are governed.

As an Albertan, I think its crazy how attached we are to our 'right' to the oil and gas found in Alberta, w/ all its revenues being ours. Seems like we're the ones milking the super-sweet deal of full control over our resources. We're a 'have' province all right, we 'have' a ton of petroleum reserves to sell.
I guess it enriches us and makes this place pretty sweet, so I'm not complaining, hell I'm employed by Oil and Gas. I just don't think we deserve its entire benefits as much as we think we do. Whatever, keep bringing in the money, I'm staying!
