If what they say is correct, there is a hella lot of oil off their respective coasts but they have an attitiude of "not in my back yard" it seems and that attitude has flowed to thier respective politicians who fight drilling there at every turn. As such thier oil needs to be piped in from other parts of the country which is has more associated costs with it which makes it less profitable to supply those locations than it is to supply Texas, Colorado, Wyoming, etc.
If that is the case then while I feel their pain, I dont feel sorry for them in the least.

This quote can be used for a few states...other than Florida and California. Get a map...draw a line from NE BC/Alaska to the Gulf of Mexico...there is oil/gas there...draw another one from S. Ontario to the Gulf of Mexico...there is oil/gas there...Draw a line from the coast of Newfoundland to Florida...there is oil/gas there...and finally a line from the Alaskan Coast to California...there is oil/gas there.
Now take away beach front property...and national parks/animal sanctuaries and you have our current drilling areas.
Now this is off topic slightly...back on topic...the gasoline shortages have to do with a lack of refining space. There hadn't been a refinery built in the US since the 70's...therefore a lack of capacity when a few were wiped out by Katrina...and now Ike.
Finally...you can "force" car companies to create alternative fuel vehicles, however, you can't force consumers to buy them. They have to be feasible and economic. Aka...the move towards hybrids in the last year since gas prices have come up significantly has killed Trucks/SUV's.
Also...I work for an Oil Company and I can tell you that I wouldn't want a sour well in my backyard...or an oil refinery; however, I sold my truck in 2007, bought a 4-banger car with a 5-speed and moved to with in a 5block walk of my office...and now I have nothing to complain about.
