Default So it has happened...there is no gas here!

Gas stations running on empty..literally.

The picture is a common sight and they are discussing whether or not to bring in the National Guard til things settle down.....insane.

Wow. I keep waiting for things to get worse here (SoFl). We have sporadic shortages. You can usually just drive down the road and find gas at another station. But even before hurricane season it wasn't unusual to pull up to a pump and find that friendly little plastic bag over the pump handle. Why it was happening back in like March I don't know. Good luck up there.

I feel like renting Mad Max so I'll know what to do when it really hits the fan.

Its really not remote at all..in fact a major Interstate runs right through it...2 of them actually.

But because the population isnt extreme they send the stuff here last.

It's still a bit strange. Half of SoFl has homes in Asheville! It's not some unknown place..

Could be the best thing to happen to us all. Then the gov't would be forced to make auto companies mass produce cars that run on something other than gas. The only way this will ever happen though is if people get the thought out of their mind that they can't function without gas in their car.

I love "Floridiots" hahahaha the world revolves around them. I like to think I'm not like that. Lots of em are native Floridians who came to resent the infiltration of northerners, or they're northerners who are bitter that moving to SoFl didn't solve all their problems. In other words miserable people who don't give a crap.

I know no one wants to say it, or hear it but the citizens of Florida and California are to blame.

If what they say is correct, there is a hella lot of oil off their respective coasts but they have an attitiude of "not in my back yard" it seems and that attitude has flowed to thier respective politicians who fight drilling there at every turn. As such thier oil needs to be piped in from other parts of the country which is has more associated costs with it which makes it less profitable to supply those locations than it is to supply Texas, Colorado, Wyoming, etc.

If that is the case then while I feel their pain, I dont feel sorry for them in the least.

Last night I heard that the Dems are going to let all the drilling bans expire.

This quote can be used for a few states...other than Florida and California. Get a map...draw a line from NE BC/Alaska to the Gulf of Mexico...there is oil/gas there...draw another one from S. Ontario to the Gulf of Mexico...there is oil/gas there...Draw a line from the coast of Newfoundland to Florida...there is oil/gas there...and finally a line from the Alaskan Coast to California...there is oil/gas there.

Now take away beach front property...and national parks/animal sanctuaries and you have our current drilling areas.

Now this is off topic slightly...back on topic...the gasoline shortages have to do with a lack of refining space. There hadn't been a refinery built in the US since the 70's...therefore a lack of capacity when a few were wiped out by Katrina...and now Ike.

Finally...you can "force" car companies to create alternative fuel vehicles, however, you can't force consumers to buy them. They have to be feasible and economic. Aka...the move towards hybrids in the last year since gas prices have come up significantly has killed Trucks/SUV's.

Also...I work for an Oil Company and I can tell you that I wouldn't want a sour well in my backyard...or an oil refinery; however, I sold my truck in 2007, bought a 4-banger car with a 5-speed and moved to with in a 5block walk of my office...and now I have nothing to complain about.

Like Ruutu said, you can drill all you want but the current disruption is due Hurricane Ike resulting in main pipelines in the southeast US to shutdown. Crude oil supply isn't the issue, refining capacity is the issue. A hurricane exposes this.

Disappointed that the Democrats caved in to allow more offshore drilling. Doesn't help much in the short term.
