Take away the 8 medals Phelps won, and it is not even close.

Living in China I have started regularly remarking on this too. Canada is kicking the carp of China relative to population. The really impressive countries are ones like Australia and Jamaica though, which rock relative to population.

But the real test is, how many gold medals does Canada have compared to the U.S. and China?

Shouldn't the stat be based on numbers of medals per Olympic athletes, not a countrys' entire population?

This site from the UK's Channel 4 has a tracker where you can see the medal counts based on things like population and GDP (and "Human Rights", although, I'm not sure how you track that, or compare it to medal counts). It uses a weighted total where gold are worth 3 points, silver are 2, and bronze are 1...
http://c4news.com/livepages/olympics...csResults.html
Canada is 32nd by population (USA is 39, China is 57th).

You can't look at it that way! Its like a losing baseball team explaining if they had faired better in one of the nine innings that they would have won. Everying inning is a piece of the game, the same way Phelps is a piece of the USA, and he won those medals representing his country.

After all the hand-wringing about Canada being "a winter sports country!!!" last week, I'm wondering what they are saying in India and Mexico. Both countries are pretty hurting at the summer Olympics and I'm sure (though I'm not going to look into it) they don't exactly clean up at the winter Olympics.
Do they even care? Or is it just us who worries about this kind of thing?

I think you can. Phelps is a freak - a once in a generation type of athlete. You can seperate what he did from how the rest of the US Olympic team is performing. And don't get me started on the stupid number of medals awarded in swimming - US and Australia win lots of swimming medals. How are they doing in other events?

India doesn't care about the Olympics cause there's no cricket
Mexico.. they're just not really good at any sport.

They've got some pretty good boxers, it's just that they turn pro at 16 or so.

Exactly, I had this same conversation with an Australian last week. He was saying Australia "cleans up" at the summer olympics while Canada struggles, and if you average out the medal counts between Canada and Australia for both summer and winter games Australia would kick Canada's ass. The stupid amount of swimming event pads Australia's medal counts.

Yes I forgot about that. They are a boxing factory.
I'm surprised their baseball team isn't in. Also I know their soccer team drew CANADA! and didn't make it.

Their (non-MLB) baseball team is not to the level of the countries competing in these Olympics (save China). Mexico is around Australia's level, a notch below the second tier of teams (Canada, Korea, Taiwan), who are a notch below the first tier (Cuba, Japan, US).

Didn't their soccer team qualify for the world cup last time? The only way Canada ever makes it back into the World Cup is if they host it.
