08/09 Champions League Thread
I'm surprised this hasn't been made yet, but the Groups are made and there's bound to be some tough games ahead:
Group A - Chelsea, Roma, Bordeaux, Cluj
Group B - Inter, Bremen, Panathanaikos, Anorthosis
Group C - Barcelona, Sporting, Basel, Shakhtar
Group D - Liverpool, PSV, Marseille, Atletico
Group E - Manchester United, Villareal, Celtic, Aalborg
Group F - Lyon, Bayern, Steaua, Fiorentina
Group G - Arsenal, Porto, Fenerbahce, Kyiv
Group H - Real Madrid, Juventus, Zenit, BATE
To me, Groups D and G are the groups of death... but with Zenit upsetting a Ronaldo-less Manchester United for the Euro Super Cup... looks like Group H is going to be very tough too. Group F has the makings of an upset too, since Fiorentina is not that far behind Lyon and Bayern in skill. Bayern and Lyon have the benefits of being giants in smaller leagues though. Groups B and C are jokes compared to the rest.

I really want to see Fener do well and if its at the expense of the gooners then even better.
Nothing would please me more than seeing Fener and Porto go through and Arse-nal go home.
Unfortunately I think Liverpool drew the hardest group followed closely by Group F.
The Scousers will come through though, I have complete confidence in the Reds.

I can't believe I have to cheer for Fenerbache this round. Yeck!
But I guess thats what I get for having to cheer against teams because my sad sack club find success in finishing 10th in the Premiership every single year.

Tough draw for the Reds. Seems like every year we get PSV or Marseille...but the real sleeper in the competition is AM. Keano and Torres need to get firing to send us to Rome!

UEFA Champions League 2008
So it's match day 1 and boy have there already been a few good games. Just watching Man U vs Villareal and though it's still tied at 0-0 there have been some great chances for both sides. Cristiano Ronaldo is also making his season debut at Old Trafford to great noise from the crowd.
Here's the official website for the rest of the scores.

Yes, no wins for Man U or Arsenal, it would have been nice if they'd actually lost but thems the breaks. I was hoping for a better performance from Fener though.

Well that was a disappointing game, Berbatov's second goal was pretty crazy though.. great result in Group H though where BATE Borisov of Belarus held Juve 2-2 at home.

Hah... great for you maybe.
Juve are in a bit of trouble right now. Their coach is showing why he's never won any major hardware, despite being a manager for top teams, they have critical injuries in Buffon, Zanetti and Trezeguet, Nedved and Del Piero are past it yet are being overplayed, skilled youth are on the bench, and Sissoko is observing Ramadan, which means he's in brutal condition.
Most Juventus fans are hoping Ranieri gets replaced by month's end... in a twist of fate, many want Inter's old coach, Mancini.

What an odd game from Liverpool.
They dominated that game, but at the same time, they were making bad passes, the communication seemed poor, Gerrard seemed very uninvolved, the play was very disjointed.
Excellent play from Torres who had a really strong game, but really unlucky at the same time. He could have had like 4 or 5 goals, two excellent saves from the PSV Goalkeeper, an off the mark header and a couple of opportunities where he lost the handle a little. But still, essentially set up the Kuyt goal, did set up the Keane goal (FINALLY!! ) and drew the foul for the Gerrard set piece goal.
But still, overall the play wasnt very good. PSV was barely there, though I was very impressed with their one Dutch striker, Amrabat, he was all over the place doing everything. Easily the best player on the pitch.
Thankfully Keane finally got his goal. He also had a solid game, but he works so hard that hes got a hard time staying in an open position for service in the box. Hes still got some work to do, but now, with all of this depth, I'd like to see Babel being put to better use.

The Italian teams really arent having a good time in the CL right now.
Despite the fact that, for some odd reason Inter is being billed as CL favourites the Italian squads are having trouble getting their legs under them.
I'm pleased that Chelsea managed to get nothing out of Transylvania. Actually, I'm just kind of glad they had to go to Transylvania, next time Dracula will suck the blood right out of Deco....I really dont like that guy.
BTW, Chelsea's CL uniforms are awful, and I thought Liverpool's grey kit sucked...but wow....
