Commute times?
Well me and my wife of 4 weeks are looking into buying a house in the burbs. Right now we have a condo just north of downtown, which is great because she walks to work in about 30 minutes. But being sick of the condo we're gonna get a house somewhere. Just trying to decide where,we are pretty much open to anywhere except the NE. Just wondering what the commute times are from different areas of the city. I was thinking around Country Hills myself but it'll be up to her as she'll be the one going to work downtown everyday. Thanks for any info.

I live in Chestermere and the commute is bad if you have set hours at work.
I go in for 7 so it only takes me 25 minutes to get to work. I also leave at 4 and I am home by 4:30.
That being said if I leave at 5, I'll be home closer to 6.

get into the Canyon Meadows/lake Bonavista/Parkland area if you can. It's still pretty reasonable to get downtown from this area (Especially if you go anderson, deerfoot, blackfoot, I have a route that works perfectly during rush hour). Once you get down to the evergreen/shawnessy/sommerset area, you get 50 000 people bottlenecking into the two exits onto Macleod, ....and just staw away from Cranston/Chaperell (which ever one is right on Macleod) if possible. Trying to get downtown from there on a bad day (stalls/minor accidents/bad weather) is enough to make a sane man go greyhound on someone's ass. I drive the other way to Okotoks each day, and during the winter somedays those guys are stopped before Highway 2 even turns into Macleod, lol.
* As a side note, be careful with your "anything but the NE comments" on Calgarypuck. you can start a war on here when that quadrant of the city is singled out as being any different from other places. You don't want one of those NE'ers to introduce drive by shootings to your new quiet SW neighborhood do you? *joke*

If you can avoid going north on Deerfoot between 24th St SE and Anderson between 7:15 and 8:30 am then living down south wouldn't be much for commute times. The same goes for southbound Deerfoot between Glenmore and Anderson during afternoon rush hour, although the problem is not nearly as severe since the traffic seems spread out over a longer time span.
Honestly, if I worked downtown I would buy in Silverado,or somewhere within walking distance to Sommerset Bridlewood station to commute. The train ride is kinda long, but at least you get a seat!

you're looking at probably 30-40 mins from country/coventry hills but do not take deerfoot if you don't have to. If you can take centre or edmonton trail, its much less of a pain.

I live in Cranston and it takes about 35 - 40 minutes on a good day. Any accidents/snow/rain, and you are looking at an hour plus easy. I usually just work from home during the first snow of the season, because I wouldn't get to work until 10:00 anyway.

We drop off our kid at the day home in Coventry Hills at 6:30. My wife drops me off at 16th Ave and Centre street around 6:50 to catch the bus from there. We take Deerfoot and at that time it's not that bad. I'm in my office booting the computer and taking the first sips from my coffee by 7:15.
The way home is a different story. The last express bus from down town to Coventry Hills leaves at 5:10. I catch that whenever I can because otherwise you're at the mercy of connections at the 78th Ave terminal. If I catch the express I'm home by 6:15. If I leave later or have to make connections... ugh. Closer to 7:00.
The commute's not too bad if you learn to sleep sitting up. Sucks to be one of those people who has to stand in the aisle the whole way. Having an iPhone so you can surf CP or watch movies on the bus would be helpful.

If your wife works downtown, Country Hills is not a bad area... the 301 Bus will be faster than driving. Nice Easy Commute. Fairly good Community. Also another bus route is opening up there as well... route 8 I think, which goes from Country/Coventry/Harvest/Panorama all the way to Brentwood/U of C and that area.

Country Hills is actually on the NW side. Across the street from it is Harvest Hills, which is on the NE. I live in the mean streets of Coventry, in the heart of the NE.
Commute by bus from Country Hills takes about 20 min to half an hour, and there are express buses that go downtown every 5 minutes during rush hour. I don't work downtown, so I drive, and my commute is about 10 minutes.

I find 20 minutes hard to believe. Maybe at 6:00 am but during rush hour I don't see it. I used to live in Inglewood and the bus there took 15 minutes to drive me in during rush hour. It cracks me up when people in the burbs try and undersell their commute times. I now live in Chestermere and the drive can be done in just over 20 minutes (at midnight) but the real commute time is 45ish.
Can you please explain how it takes 10 minutes to drive from Coventry to downtown? Again, from my house in Inglewood (on the downtown side of Blackfoot) it took me ten minutes to drive in.
You live in the burbs there is no reason to lie about commute times. The OP is looking for honest answers so he can decide where to move. Please don't fill him with fantasies...I don't think that is what he is looking for.

I believe if you read his post correctly, he states that he doesn't work in downtown, so therefore his commute is about 10 minutes.
Also, I live in Country Hills as well, and it only takes me 20-30 minutes to get downtown...and that's leaving my place at 7:15. On some days it can be worse for sure, but it's really not that bad. Snowy days are terrible however.

Commute time depends a lot on when you start work. For myself, I live in Tuscany and I leave the house at 6:00 and drive to the Dalhousie train station. From there, I take a train to Southland. I walk in the office at about 7:05.
I know the express bus here will get you downtown in about 25-30 minutes, depending on where on the route you catch the bus and what time you catch it. I think when the Crowfoot train station is done there won't be anymore express buses though.

First, sounds like you are a kept man. Bravo sir.
From the deep SW I used to take 35-45 mins door to door when I worked downtown. That was by car.

Live in Okotoks, takes about 40 to 45 minutes to get in, about the same to get home. Work just outside downtown.

I'm in Harvest Hills, the express bus takes 40 minutes at most to get downtown.
