Default HDTV/Xbox 360 Issue

So the other day I bought my first HD tv (used) and I hooked up my xbox to it. I realized the other day that I still have that little switch on the back of the xbox component connector to TV. I switch it to HDTV and it resets the xbox like it should, but when it comes up again, it comes in split screen. Vertically.
something like this
||
thoughts on how I can fix it?

Maybe try turning them both off and unplugging their power cords for a couple of minutes?

what setting of resolution do you have you xbox on? I have a feeling you might have it on 480p, 720p or 1080p on your xbox and your tv might not handle that resolution. If memory serves me right my old tv which was only 480i did this when I set the xbox to 480p. Try just changing it to 1080i and see what happens.

Yes, there is a setting on the xbox itself for what resolution to output. You need to ensure that matches what your TV input can accept. Just a guess, but your TV might be set to 1080i or 720p - make sure the xbox is the same.

The 2 above got it dead on... A cheaters way of getting into the screen so u can see what your doing is to put your TV into SPLIT mode, or PIP. It will allow you to see the 360 and select the proper resolution for your TV. Or you could hook up your old original cables and select it too... I had the exact same issue on mine.. what a pain in the ass it was...

when its in its split mode its on 480p and its clear but split in half. then when I switch it to the higher resolutions it gets scrambled but I can tell its not split in half.

I'm using the standard ones that come with the 360. It has both on it, and you can switch it back and forth from TV to HDTV depending on what you have plugged in.

Not totally related to your problem, but buy an HDMI cable if you want true HD gaming. The difference is astounding.
