I agree with some of what you're saying, but I disagree about the poor immigrant family bit. That was normally the case about 10-15 years ago, but now a days, these thugs are more often than not, from decent families where the parents do well for themselves as professionals.
It's all about envy and easy money in this lifestyle when kids first get a taste of making $500-$600 in a week 'starting out' and think to themselves, 'why work at Subway as a sandwich artist and make considerably less, when I can do this?'.
The situation snowballs and as they continue to stick their head out and jump on "business opportunities", they find themselves making four, five times that figure in the same period and the idea of "getting out" to ensure a criminal-record-free life at the expense of this kind of money isn't worth it to them because normally, it's too late by then having been out of school for years.
The violence comes from business deals gone bad occasionally, but some times, the events are childish and trivial at best. Pride and the need to be "known" are usually strong factors. Groupthink is widely prominent in these circles and by association, you can be either a friend or an enemy. Even if you weren't remotely responsible for the act deemed revenge-worthy, by being part of "them", you are marked and if it so happens that you are with the target at the time, you really have no say in the matter.
