Default Any mechanics out there??

Anyone know anything about cars out there??

Its a 92 . Recently while driving the sputtered out. When I tried to start the car there was no power. Seemed like the battery had died. I realized that it was more likely to be the since it cut out while driving. Got a rebuilt alternator put it in, boosted the car, drove a short distance and it died again. Took the alternator out and got it tested ,and it tested good. Thought maybe we had a bad connection re-installed the alternator and attempted it again. Car died out once again.

The night before the car died my radio blew a fuse in the car. I took the fuse out and replaced it when we put the new alternator in the first time. It blew the fuse again within about 10 minutes. Thats when I took the alternator out and had it tested.

Any ideas? Seems like it must be a short somewhere, but if the fuse for the radio is out would it still be a problem.

I should also note that my friend who installed the alternator, did not have the proper connector for wire for the alternator output stud. He just stripped the wire and tightened the bolt down claiming it would be fine until I got the proper connector.

Well thats the info hopefully someone out there can help me.

My series of diagnosis would start at the BATTERY. From your post, it really sounds like either battery or alternator, but you really only addressed the alternator side. Does your battery gauge hang around the midway point?

If not the battery, I'd be looking at the spark module. If not that, you have a bad connection somewhere. Coil?

I re-read your post. It is clearly electrical. Forget the module unless it cranks but doesn't turn.
Your best bet is to take it to an electrical place and cross your fingers. Chances are that there is some stupid cross-wiring in your fusebox that is causing epic fail for your car and the fix is some 50 cent wire bridge. Of course, it'll cost you $150. But it's worth it.

ps, your friend is right. As long as there is a good connection, you don't necessarily need connectors. Frayed wires wrapped around a bolt is ok. As long as it's tight. Definitely not the best way to do it, but it works.

If you're driving your car a short distance before it cuts leads me to think you have a short somewhere. I agree with 4x4, take it to an electrical place.

Hey thanks for the replies...

I forgot to mention. I also replaced the battery.....It went dead in about 30 minutes of driving.

If your battery is going dead that would tell me that your alternator isn't charging your battery enough while you are driving. Either that or you bought a defective battery.

Fusible links? Bad main ground?

Battery going dead with a good alternator usually means something wrong in between them on the charging circuit. Or a bad battery of course, which should be the first step.

Went through this, couple suggestions:

NEVER charge a dead battery from a new alternator. Get a mechanic to charge the battery. Using a new alternator to charge a dead battery can destroy your new alternator.

My buddy also had a very similiar problem and it turned out one of the cells in brand new his battery was defective. If you take it for a "specific weight capacity" check, they should be able to determine if it messed.

Then again, I am no mechanic. Disclaimer-It might not be called s[specific weight capacity test either.
