Ideas for how to pull off a quick move
Mentioned in another thread that someone has made an offer on a house I have. Problem is that they want it for August 1, and I still have stuff in it. Since this is Canada and we're not that advanced beyond the third world at many things...I have two choices for moving truck companies for one way moves, and one is U'Haul. So essentially I can't get a truck that won't explode until the 6th at the earliest. I don't have any belonging type things that would need to be packed up, but I have a fair bit of furniture still there. Given the timeframe there is no hope of getting a moving truck by that date. I'd hate to lose a deal because of the date since right now the real estate market is going down, down, down, and further down, and down again some more after that, and than probably back down to the 2005 price I bought the place for, than down some more. But by the same token....if I can't hold up my end of the bargain...I can't make a deal.
Right now I'm at going to Edmonton and trying to get my stuff into storage, pay for a month and than go back at a later date when I can get a truck.
Another option might be to try and negotiate for my house to be rented for the first week and force the guy to sign a document stating that he assumes 100% liability for my stuff until a later date?
Anyways thats the best I got. Anyone got anything to suggest, that don't involve burning the stuff or selling it?

Try Discount, they usually have moving vans and they are not as likely to blow up.

There's a new company called PODS. They drop off a container at your place, you pack it, then they move it to the new place where you unpack it.

Rent a Ryder Truck if you want to have a truck that isn't held together with spit and bale wire unlike Uhaul trucks.

Maybe ask the guy moving in if he wants to buy the furniture then buy yourself some new stuff?

Has it got a garage?
If so, ask if the buyer will let you rent it back for a week (or even just use it).
Have you looked at budget for a rental truck?
You could even try one of those places that has storage cubes. They drop it off at the house, you fill it then they a take it and store it or move it. I believe some of the national movers have them.
I know a friend did that moving back to Ontario. I'm not sure If its available as a local solution.
That's all I got...

How much stuff?
Do you have friends who can loan you some space for a bit until you can pick it up, or perhaps rent a storage locker?

Oh man is this ever sad....I can not figure out why August 1st is such an issue for this guy.
Problem is that I need a one way move...given where I live now, two companies in Canada do that. At this time of the month, any moving companies are booked solid especially in Edmonton as there is always a huge number of people trying to flee that vortex of crap every month. Containers...again...lot's available after August 4th!
As for borrowing someone's garage, how do I get someone to assume liability or insurance issues should my stuff get damaged, or their house burn down. Now I don't have a whole lot...but I have a couch, loveseat, King Bed, Frame for bed, double bed, two chester drawers, two night tables, and armoire, a T.V. and stand. 2 coffee tables, 4 end tables, Kitchen Table and Chairs. Which amounts to between 15 and 20k to replace it all.

Get a truck and start moving, borrow a trailer (I've even used a horse trailer that I sprayed out) and do it over a few days. If you have someone helping you, go to Uhaul and buy all the boxes, pack them and put them at the front door so they're easy to get. Rent a dolly so you can take 4 at a time.
Any time I've moved I put all the boxes at the front door, lined up a few trucks and a trailer, and finished it all in one day. It can be done, it just takes a little planning.

I'd go with 4x4's idea.

Yeah....but good luck getting a pod until after this so called magical date. I bet on August 4th they can give me one for a quarter of the price.
Essentially the capacity to move people at the end of the month in a summer month just doesn't exist in this country. I think I'm hooped.
Plus I'm off site and can't get there until the weekend at the earliest...there isn't a soul to hire to do it for anything that would even resemble a fair price. Good god, why didn't this guy come to me two weeks ago. Drive's me nuts.

Can you hire family members? They usually work for cheap, and are probably more reliable than some dude off the street.

I don't see why you're so opposed to U-haul.
If it's the differene between selling your house, just get a truck from them.

I can get a truck from them on August 2nd! 1 day after this magical drop dead date. My last offer was that he had to insure my stuff let me keep it in the garage of the house at no cost to me until the 15th, compensate me to come there this weekend and move the stuff out of the house, and grant me full access to the gargage at any time of my choice until the 15th to get the stuff out. If he'll take the place on August 7th...no conditions.
This guy must get an inheritence or something so long as he own's a house on August 1st....I really don't get it.

Could you not rent one of those huge cargo vans from a rent a car place?

Try to rent a truck from Ikea or Home Depot -- they have them available for hourly (daily?) rentals (i.e. when you buy from them) and may not be pre-booked that day...

This just keeps getting funnier. Now this guy is convinced that he can find all the stuff I have had zero luck finding. I laid out my terms and said....good luck!
Now I'm just intrigued to know what exactly this guy gets if he has a house by August 1st. Maybe the woman of his dreams will satisfy his wildest desires if he has a house that is his own on August 1st and can prove it. Has to be something that crazy, or even weirder.

Call some farmers and rent a big livestock trailer. The guy who used to live above me hauled everything he owned from his suite using one. Seemed to work splendidly.

Could it be that his lease expires from his current place of residence on July 31, and that he does not want to be homeless for a week?

Well after having tried to find me a truck himself...he finally admits....for what I need, August 1st isn't going to happen. Of course the company who had a truck for August 6th....now says August 8th. Mind you I think August 8th is the absolute earliest that the lawyers could get enough of the papers signed anyways. The joys of trying to facilitate a deal.
