(Lanny) OK, I'm going to stick my neck out here...
Lanny (the poster) showed up here for a recent clandestine sojourn unto politics.
I am not exactly sure why he got banned, it may have been one of the times I was away. But while he was opinionated, he was always well spoken and offered a perspective. (if a mod wants to tell me why he got banned maybe I'll change my mind)
With all the new posters, many of which go for quantity over quality, it would be nice to have him back. Guys like Cowperson, Ro, and Lanny, MADE this forum what it is. Something we are lacking nowadays.
Can we not bring him back on a limited basis? If he can prove himself to have conformed to the rules he broke, can we not bring him back into the fold? He was a HUGE part of CP.
Tyler
Edit: I didn't always agree with any of them. I got into dustups with Cow as often as I did with Lanny. And Often Ro was the word of wisdom in the middle. But they were all superior posters, much better than 99% of what goes on here now. If we can have him back, it would be a boon to the forum.

I'm going to back this. I don't know what happened between him and the mods, but his last foray onto the board was (again) interesting. If I had a choice between him and a number of his opponents, well, I'd take him over most of the latter.
Another perspective to take on this are the "stewards" of these kind of communities, and their impact overall to the quality of the community, discussions and post quality. In a classic perspective, Lanny, as a poster had a massive altruistic streak - as much as he posted, he was also responsible for generating a lot of great content on the site that encouraged conversation not because he was being a dick about what he was saying, but because they posts were typically well thought out (with the occasional flamewar transgression thrown in, but that's not atypical of these types of websites). From an engagement perspective, Lanny was an excessive "user" and a part of the personality/brand of Calgary Puck, and to banish him without an explanation as to why to the community at large is a mistake on behalf of the folks running the site, in my opinion. I work with companies here in Japan running online product communities and tell them exactly the same thing. Like it or not, as a valued member of the community I think explanations of these kind of key community member bans are necessary so that others understand don't need to come up with their own fantastic reasons for the ban (as an example, there a likely more than a few members here that think a lot of Lanny's enemies ganged up to get him kicked off the site, which isn't a sentiment those running the board want lying around).
I guess my request is, if it is impossible to reinstate him, at the very least offer up the why he was banned in the first place. Ultimately, I would like to see him posting again, and I think it would be a positive step forward for the CP community, but understand the position of those running the board to make the decisions they see fit. We're not talking about jettisoning MainFlame or some guy who posted crap when he was loaded, but rather a keystone of the CP franchise that helped make the community what it is today.

How many 2nd chances is the guy going to get?
I count two just in the last year.
With all due respect, Lanny can go F himself.

Please explain.
I do not know why he was banned in the first place.
If not bringing him back, please enlighten me why he should not be here.

I guess the point is that bans like this seem to fall in a fairly grey zone - some seem to know why he's gone, others agree with it. Was he stirring the pot, insulting posters in private, smacking down certain groups of posters on the site in such a fashion that they took offense to it?
It's nice to wish ill on the guy, but I still think he is an exception to the rule of the board about keeping these decisions between the poster and the mods. We're not talking about Shergill, after all.

That's fine, and you're not owed an explanation, and you probably won't get one.

Because he's done things to get him banned obviously?
I was on the other end of one of them. He was banned again, then brought back, and banned again.
For all of you saying Lanny made this site, what a bunch of horse . Lanny said and did things that make people not want to post here. I'm not saying I am some sort of wonderful poster, I'm anything but average. But Lanny is a major league A-Hole, and there things he said to me in a thread last fall to get banned where ridiculous. I went out of my way, several times to do peices for this site that people would enjoy. I didn't have to, and it took alot of time for me to do, and the person I interviewed. Lanny used those things as a reason to tear me (and the person) apart.
Bring Lanny back? What a joke. The guy has been brought back many times, and craps the bed again and again.

There is no grey zone for the moderators.
As regular posters we aren't owed, nor do we deserve an explanation.

Obviously you have a problem with the poster.
Maybe we will get an impartial opinion.
And yeah, I think I can ask for news. I got the same amount of red you do...
It was just a question.
Don't turn it into a crusade...

This is where we'll likely agree to disagree. The way that I think these things get put to bed is through clarity. I just saw him someone who looked like him post well-reasoned arguments in another thread, and then he was gone. While it would be easy to imagine that he was violating the "posting under another name rule", I'm not sure that's the full extent of the ban.

What did he get banned for this time?
Getting banned for say something smart?
Just tell me, in in thread or in private and I'll let it go.
McCain banned and fined several others for carrying signs.
Is this the same? Just let me know.

Nah, you were the one who responded 4 times. Without reason or intention.
I made mine in the first post. You just said 'no'.
Like I said, just tell me.

Bannings are a private matter, we don't discuss them publicly.
I think the mods all agree that Lanny brought something to the board and any decision regarding him was not taken lightly at all; there was much discussion. But ultimately there are rules in place and no one should be exempt from those rules.
If you have further questions you can PM me or the Moderator account.
