Default Ducks make 2nd big move

Well with 5 Dmen rated 77OV or higher the Ducks GM felt that they had a position of strength to deal from and wanted to take advantage of it. As a result they made a move today, trading away #2 dman, Ed Jovanovski to the Predators along with 4.5 million in cap (wow). Here is how the deal breaks down:

To the Preds:
Ed Jovomonkey
4.5 mill cap

To the Ducks:
Robbie Nilsson
Nikita Filatov
Seidenberg
3rd 09

The tough part through all of this is dealing away all of that cap. Vic stood tall and refused to back down with any bit of cap. As a result we come out even in cap with this deal.

The key here is that we felt the loss of Jovo would not be significant given the ratings of our other dmen. Nilsson is a great depth forward who is still very much young. In addition we get Filatov, a guy we had been targeting since the draft. We believe he will be a dominant power in this league someday and we are glad to get him on board very early in his developmental stages. Seidenberg is just a fill in for this year and the 3rd was inserted because I am sending hundreds of briefcases full of cash.

Nilsson will step in perfectly and is a great young forward to have. We will wait patiently for Filatov to develop into a monster. Make no mistake the Ducks want to win this year, but given our defensive depth this was a move we had to make.

Thanks to Vic for the good trade talks, best of luck to Jovo in Nashville.

Next on tour: Ducks get a backup goalie in cphl and ahl, maybe add a 72-73ov dman too, we'll see. Stay tuned.

This was pretty straight-forward for the Predators. We had no choice but to add a defenceman that could play the top line. It is a bittersweet move though as we had to move Nik Filatov to get him. The money is even though, and from our standpoint that was critical.

In other news the Predators moved Jamie McGinn to St. Louis for a 3rd in 2009.

Lastly Ravi, I would be happy to move Derian Hatcher for you, since you are longing for a 72 rated defenceman!!!

Well this sort of makes it so Nashville better make the playoffs this year...or else. Given that Jagr and Niedermayer are going to eat up 18.5 million of Nashvilles remaining cap space and that their current 3-4 on defence is Hatcher and Preissing....call me skeptical when considering the team as being deep enough to be able to do much in the playoffs if they get there.

4.5 M is a lot of cap to move and the deal is pretty even right now as the Preds get the highest rated player for next year.

But for the future, I definately like it for the Ducks. Nilsson is a 2nd line player that should go up a couple ov points again next year and Filatov is a top prospect.

Good deal both ways. Preds get a top dman, Ducks get a couple of young forwards. One which can step up and play this year.

Agreed. Sometimes you need the depth guys more then you need the big name player. It certainly helps the Preds now, but they gave up on 2 good young players for Jovo.

A) Sorry Spike, you're right it was for Arniel!

B) I can't argue that we don't have the depth to compete here over the long term. This trade definitely makes us better today than we were yesterday though, and there will have to be many more deals to come from us if we hope to get under the roster limits by the time cap opens. I understand that there are some spots to be filled here behind the top players, but in all honesty there are still quite a few useful guys here!

I must admit...that I've given up trying to follow all your special conditions with the Sharks regarding this guy signs for this, this guy signs for that and team A gets this money, or this money gets returned etc...I base a lot of what I say on the premise of you owe the Sharks a fairs size chunk of money some time after you sign your pending UFA guys. After the free agent frenzy passes through...I don't see many teams having any money to take on much for salary...so to get rid of it and address roster holes, won't be easy. But maybe I'm not following the conditions correctly and it's them paying you all the money.

As a major Jovonovski hater, and as someone who's been looking to move Hossa, I have to say I like this for the Ducks a lot. I haven't been able to get nearly as good of a package as that for Hossa who is not only a better player and younger but is likely to have a career season playing alongside Zetterberg and Datsyuk. Only way this evens out is if Filatov never comes over to NA, and with him it's likely he will.

Your Jedi mind tricks are wearing thin!

But I don't see how the Sharks could possibly make worse offers or ask for more for their players than they already do....The ensuing comedy should be gold.

I can trade you Jovo for Hossa and then you can move him for a similar return?

Honestly, no one in their right mind (or even a guy like me) is going to send over Hossa and $4.5 million for a package like this though!

Ouch, low blow! Jealous that I didn't make an offer to you?

Well I should give the Sharks credit for at least making offers....I guess an offer is better than no offer. Even if the offer is designed to eventually materialize into nothing.
