I was out playing airsoft the other day out by Olds and while I was buried in the bushes and mud as usual keeping a low profile in the tall grass...I photographed this beauty crawling on me.

Prettier than some of the other creepy crawlies on that website... I don't think I could get close enough to a spider to take a picture.

Thanks for the link!
I found 2 of these things about a year and a half ago...
Scariest bug I've ever seen in person, I'm sort of a little girl when it comes to creepy crawlers though. Anyway, we put one of these guys in an ice cream pale with a bunch of small water beetles, and he turned out to be quite a fighter. He did not like those water beetles.
Both of the ones I found were a bit bigger than the one in the picture though, I'd say 3 inches.

Ya, I've seen those before. I don't know what they're called, but they were great for putting in the girls' pencil cases in elementary school. Baby garter snakes were even better though.

Up until today I've been calling those things 'skeletors'. I don't know where I came up with it, it just seemed to fit.

They're simply called Giant Water Bugs. They're the largest of the "true bugs," live in ponds and shallows, and eat most anything smaller than them.
I used to catch the occasional one when hunting for salamanders as a kid. I'll never forget when one of them crawled out of the water in the bucket I kept it in, dried itself on a rock, and then flew away. I had no idea those things could fly until then. I can't imagine how nasty it would be to have one smack you on the face while cycling or walking down the street.
For more.

Jeez, I was expecting something creepy or scary, but these bugs are all kind of sissy bugs that are harmless.

Nah, the fact that someone is holding it tells me that its a miss prissy pants kinda Spider.
I'm talking about the insect like the blister beatle, or the African Killer bees, you know, killers.

I just got back from a long camping trip around the western US and saw lots and lots of really cool bugs, but this was the major highlight - a windscorpion. Weird, weird arachnid. I knew what it was (I'm a bit of a bug geek), so it didn't freak me out, but I can see how it would scare the bejeezus out of an arachnophobe.

On the flip side: It was just like "Bug-MXC"!!!! I was putting my money on the scorpion.
