N.Y. millionaire gets 11 years in prison for enslaving workers - WTF?!

Varsha Sabhnani, 46, was convicted with her husband in December on a 12-count federal indictment that included forced labor, conspiracy, involuntary servitude and harboring aliens.
The trial provided a glimpse into a growing U.S. problem of domestic workers exploited in slave-like conditions.
The victims testified that they were beaten with brooms and umbrellas, slashed with knives, and forced to climb stairs and take freezing showers as punishment. One victim was forced to eat dozens of chili peppers and then was forced to eat her own vomit when she couldn't keep the peppers down, prosecutors said.

I'm not trying to make generalizations or condone this in any way, but its possible they were immigrants and this was part of their culture. This kind of thing happens all over the world, its pretty disturbing.

ummm...slashing people with knives and making them eat their own vomit isn't any cultural trait that I've ever heard of. Sounds like some demented messed up people on a power trip.

Maybe it's just me, but why wouldn't these housekeepers, just, you know... leave the house and go tell police? I highly doubt they were kept as prisoners in the house at ALL times.

My guess would be there was a threat that they would be deported.

Deported, eat vomit. Deported... eat vomit... I dunno. Tough choice there.
I've heard of this more in terms of Haitian restaveks, but I have read of cases where the abused women are so conditioned into believing they are slaves deserving of their status of being slaves that they do not question what is happening to them. Often they fear their masters so much that they wouldn't DREAM of disobeying their masters.
It's different than wife beaters who will say stuff like "if you leave I will kill you" or "if you go the police nobody will believe you". In the restavek cases these slaves are virtually born slaves and don't question their servitude. They don't need to be threatened by violence to be obedient. They were broken at such a young age they wouldn't dream of being disobedient.
