What else are you looking at? My only experience with Gretsch is with a copy, but they have a good repetition for sure. I like Gibsons for sustain and overall playability and fenders for tone. (particularly the telecaster)
Since you're already looking in the upper cost bracket, maybe you want to check out rickenbacker's or a (fender) jazzmaster.
If you are looking to get a hollow or semi-hollow in particular Gretsch and Rickenbauker are best known for it. Gibson also makes several high quality ones too.
hope that helps

All I can get

Yeah, I've got four of them.
(Right to left)
An Electromatic Bo Diddley (the less expensive signature version, but still just a great guitar). Good for a lot of garage rock sounds. The humbucker pickups sound a lot like a Gibson SG. Sits nice on the lap too. I play this one lots -- I guess I'm less inhibited playing a cheaper guitar. I've since had a Bigsby installed on it.
An Elliot Easton (dude from The Cars) model Duo Jet with a chambered mahogany body and hand-wound TV Jones pickups. Hard to tell from the photo, but this is a brilliant green color and all the fittings are gold-plated. This thing does it all: Clean, ringing tones, impressive crunch. Great for Beatles, CCR, and classic rock stuff. Beats a Les Paul IMHO.
My Jumbo Rancher Acoustic. Rock Maple in the famous Gretsch orange, with all the Cowboy motif (cactus, bullhead) inlays on the neck.Has a Fishman pickup inside. Big, booming sound like the wide open prairies.
A bamboo-yellow 120th Anniversay. TV Jones pickups and most of the features you find on the far more expensive Brian Setzer model. This is for country and rockabilly sounds.
Gretsches and Rickenbackers are my favorite guitars for the kind of music I like to play. I guess it comes down to whatever your personal preference is. What guitars you find cool.

my experience are they are good guitars, but like anything else really depends on your style.
What type of sound are you striving for?

Well, I already have a Stratocaster, so Iīm looking for something a whole different... Playing a lot of rock, 70s, early 80s. Not so sure a Gretsch goes with that kind of style... But its such a niece piece...
Hehe... Billy Duffys Gretsch makes the whole video for "Rain". Love it!
Like the Rickenbacker, I feel they have such an unique sound, but not the kind Iīm looking for in my overall playing.

I eventually will get a Rickenbacker 330/12. My friend bought one of the affordable Gretsch and one of the pickups has not worked since the day he bought it. I have yet to fix it for him also.
I really love my SG Classic there is nothing comparable to the sound of P90's on a SG imo.

The guy bought it last summer, for (give or take a few, I have to transform the currency from SKR to CAD) 4,600 CAD (instrumenst arenīt cheap in Sweden...)
Now he sells it for 2.900 CAD. According to himself, he has played it about 5 times. Seems like he needs the money for a trip he is going to make next weekend. Thinking about perhaps offering him around 2.000 CAD, and if he doesnt like it, fine by me...

Hmm hard to tell by the looks... there are lots of websites that sell counterfeit LP guitars that look almost Identical for like $300 bucks. People then flip them in NA as the original thing for way more.
I would ask for a reciept from when he bought it.

Yes, I'm not sure what the guitar market is like in Sweden. There are probably much fewer counterfeits there than are in North America or Britain.
I've always had problems with Gibsons given the thicker necks, I need a thin neck, jumbo frets, low action, etc. because of my tiny microscopic hands. My fingers are really short, I've been stretching them for years but it's still hard to barre or span chords.

You should invest in getting a Carvin gutiar.

I'd start by double checking the serial number on the back of the headstock on the Gibson website. Its a custom shop guitar, making it outrageously expensive, but easier to track. The fact that he has a picture of the serial numbers suggests its legitimate.

They arent illegal technically, if you however try and sell it as the real thing then its illegal.. I think
But it is NOT a real gibson. Chinese made cheap knockoff, that looks suprisingly acurate.
Dead giveaway on this one is the 3 screw truss cover. Gibsons come with 2. However some knockoffs also have 2. Some people have been trying to pass these off as the real thing on ebay and other places
