Default Calgary Police Do Not Recycle Batteries

No word of a lie, I just had an off duty police officer come in to recycle a bunch of batteries. He made a comment that he wished the other districts did it as well. When I asked, he told me that the Calgary Police do not recycle batteries, even though they can hand out tickets to citizens caught trying to throw them out (like its ever happened, but technically...).

This really made me mad, and the officer in question iterated their own disgust over this disgusting practice by our police.

Recycle your batteries.

Do you have any idea how horrible batteries in the ground are for, well, everything?

Would these be the same police I saw speed through a red light with their lights on and then 5 minutes later see them parked in the Tim Hortons parking lot last week?

Police officers are brutal, I have no respect for the profession anymore.

Back on topic, it's 2008...Recycle.

Did he actually know they threw them into the garbage or does he just have no involvement in the other districts recycling programs.

He said "I'm the only one in any of the districts I know taking the time to round up the batteries and take care of it. We go through tonnes of batteries for just about everything, and nobody seems to have time to deal with it properly. I'm just a bit of an eco-freak, but as far as I know none of the other districts recycle their batteries either."

(paraphrased a little bit).

Its the CPS, what do you expect. They, the department, only will recycle the batteries if there is money to be received or profits to be made most likely. Its all bout the money for them, dont you know.

Kudos to the officer for doing it on his own though, much respect to him.

Ah, so how far does he know would be the question. I'm guessing not much since it would be pretty hard to keep tabs on other districts garbage habits.

I'm not denying what this guy is doing is a good thing, but I tend not to label the entire force based on what one guy thinks others are not doing.

Oh... and throwing batteries into the garbage is a criminal act? This is actually news to me because I don't keep on it, I use rechargeables.

Ikea also has a receptacle to toss them into, near their returns desk.

Would be easy for them to just set up a trash can for used batteries and then take them in once a month.

To me it's not really a big deal, but there is some hyprocricy there. The police are there to uphold the law, they need to follow it or they lose their "credibility" no matter how small or insignificant the law being broken is. Not sure credibility is the correct word there, but it shouldn't matter how big or small the law is, they need to be followed. If we are expected to recycle batteries, the police should as well. Lead by example is what i'm trying to illustrate.

How do you know that it was the same squad car?

I’m sure you have a lot of respect for them the next time you call 911 or are in need of help

Having no respect for Cops is absolutely ridiculous, these guys get paid a bad wage to put there life on the line and protect the people

I remember moving from BC to Alberta in 2004, trying to find out what days I should put out my recycling for pick up. I got a lot of laughs and then quickly realized no one did it.

Yep - I used to work at a landfill. I didn't lose any sleep knowing a pile of energizer batteries were in the millions of tons of garbage that we throw out every year that are properly maintained and managed by the city's fine landfill staff.

How come police cars don't have daytime running lights like the rest of us?

Never noticed that before but I imagine that it's because sometimes they want to turn off their lights but have the car running. With daytime running lights you can't do that.

As for the battery thing, it is kinda sad that they don't have a recycle bin for their batteries. They must go through tonnes of batteries per year with the flashlights and the walkies and whatever else. Just place it beside the box of fresh batteries and take it in once a month...
