Default Help! I've got liquid stuck in my ear and I can't get it out!

Well, it's basically what the title says. I had an ear infection earlier this week, which has thankfully been cleared up, but the liquid has remained stuck in my ear canal for the last couple days and its becoming increasingly annoying not being able to hear out of that ear properly.

Anybody know of any tricks to flush it out?

Pinch your nose, and try to blow out of it.

Should help to relieve the pressure in your ears. Don't blow to hard though.

Thanks for the quick responses people but unfortunately I've tried all of those methods and it seems the liquid is just too far in there to come out so easily.

*sigh* I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and go to a walk-in clinic I guess

Good call, don't mess with your ear drum, it's pretty fragile.

Have you tried using Mineral Oil? It will pretty much dissolve everything in there. Lay down with the ear up, have an assistant fill your ear, and then gently massage your ear/side of your head with a warm damp cloth. After about 5-10 minutes of this, drain the ear as best you can and go have a shower and carefully allow the water to hit the ear and clean it out.

Gorilla dance...

With your head (ear with water inside) tilted to one side, jump up and down like a crazed gorilla.

Works every time.

A few options:

Vinegar is a home remedy which is recommended by divers to get rid of water in the ear.

Buy some ear wax remover from the drug store. It's just a few drops in your ear and follow directions.

I've candled my ears a few times and had good results. This despite Health Canada whining about it.

Like FurnaceFace said, try Vinegar. But first, sprinkle a bit of baking soda into the ear. That'd be COOOOOL!

I wouldnt describe a warning to protect your own health as "whining", but in this country you're free to use a placebo with potentially dangerous complications.

To the original poster, are you sure the fluid in your ear is not pus? It is not uncommon following an inner ear infection that your ear drum perforates, and leaks pus into the outer ear. If this is so, I would refrain from sticking anything into your ear, especially wax/vinegar/snake oil until someone qualified takes a look.

Having candled before, if you follow the directions it's not overly dangerous. I can see a problem if you don't follow directions but that's pretty much with any product isn't it? My ears have also felt very clean afterwards and has seemed to help open up my ears for dive trips - which is my reason for candling.

Perhaps I should have used green or some other colour text as I tend to "hyperbolize" at times. It was partly a sarcastic comment and partly exaggeration...perhaps turquoise would be a good option...

Well I guess it was a good thing I went to the clinic because it wasn't a liquid at all. It turns out it was a scab that formed over my eardrum itself after my infection was healed. The doc prescribed me some antibiotic eye-drops which he said would help to loosen the scab about 3-4 days sooner than it would normally fall off.

So there you have it people. When in doubt, go to a doctor!

Oh and thanks again for all the replies. At least now I'll know what to do now when I actually have liquid stuck in my ear.

From someone with chronic ear problems, I always recommend going to the doctor. I at one time was considering trying home remedies to get rid of what I thought was just water in my ear. It turns out I have a pin sized hole in my eardrum which has been there since I was a very young child.

This causes liquid to get stuck in the middle and inner ear. So if id tried any of these remedies like Vinager I would have been poring the stuff directly into my inner ear. I don't want to think about what would have happened then.

For the record. Most people say Ear Candleing is a crock. The supposed ear wax that comes out is actually residue from the candle.
