Sick days are considered a "privilege". Not all companies have/use sick days, so it's up to them to do with as they will. Anywhere I have worked went by the rule: if you don't use them, too bad.
For Vacation pay... Usually 4% of your earnings which they will either pay out to you on your cheque or bank it until you use it, quit or get fired. Some companies (like mine currently) say you have to work a year before you can use them. It was in my contract when I was hired. You may want to check an employee manual that might explain your companies policies.
But as I have only been working for 4 months, if I was to quit tomorrow: they would have to pay me out 4% X salary earned in the 4 months I was there.
As for giving notice, Alberta Employment Standards state:
The minimum notice requirements that employees are required to provide are:
- one week - for employment of more than three months, but less than two years
- two weeks - for employment of two years or more.
If an employee gives proper notice, the employer must pay all earnings to the employee within three days following termination of employment.
If an employee quits without proper notice all wages, overtime, holiday and vacation pay is due to the employee within 10 days after the date on which the notice would have expired if it had been given.
Hope this helps!
