I am tired of Rogers Cable trying to deafen me!
I have Rogers Digital Cable and everytime one of their Rogers ad's comes on the volume goes up at least twice as loud as the movie/show I am watching. This happens with other commercials too but not near the volume increase that the Rogers ad's are. Why is this? How can it be fixed? I like to fall asleep watching my tv but I can't anymore because as soon as one of their crappy Rogers ad's plays it wakes me up. I can't enjoy tv anymore without having the remote always ready to mute during the commercials, it's ridiculous!

Somebody really needs to start a petition on this. I was once told that the reason commercials 'sound' louder is because quite often, the program you are watching isn't using it's full allowable volume (quiet romantic scene) before going to commercial. Then the commercial uses it's max allowable volume and the contrast causes you to leap out of the lazyboy and kick the TV right off the stand.
I don't know how or why they do this. There is nothing more annoying than the freakishly loud commercial. Start the petition, diss, I'll be the first one to sign.

I dunno. How about we make a deal. I'll help you track down the owner of Rogers and you can kick him in the balls, if you help me track down the owner of Bell so that I can kick him in the balls... Si?

There is a petition at this site.
http://www.loudcommercials.com/
It seems to target the U.S. though.

Weren't there TVs that used to maintain the volume level, so commercials didn't do that?

Southpark is always very low volume on the Comedy Network. I'm quite sure for this reason.

On the CTV HD Daily Show its brutally quiet, then a commercial pops and I'm franticly leaping for the remote to turn it down.

By far the most annoying and frustrating part of watching anything on TV. I simply cannot watch network television without the remote in my hand at all times to hit mute when the crap commercials come up. Drives me crazy.

Its not just Roger's, ITS SHAW CABLE TOO. It goes back to various advertising agencies in the 70's that realized that most people don't pay attention to T.V., but they knew that people turn their heads at sudden sound, so they went back to their clients LIKE COCA COLA, PEPSI, FORD, GM, AND THE NFL. And said, we need to make our commericals louder, and the T.V. shows quieter. BUT WHAT ABOUT SUBLIMINAL MESSAGES, THAT WAS THE QUESTION TOO. So they embeded images in the Lassie show encouraging kids to SMOKE. And the advertising wars were on.

I remember this being a problem a while back but it seems to have come back. I don't think it's legal either.
And it seems to be much worse on the all digital channels.

The CRTC's Fact Sheet for sound levels and the loudness of commercials. According to them:
Ongoing difficulties with audio levels should be reported to the programming service involved, as well to company who delivers the signal to your home. Ask the programming service to check the audio levels being fed to its transmitter, taking care to note the specific date and time of occurrence and the program or commercial involved.
