Default Stars Draft Pick Review

#28 Anton Gustafsson C

Well I got him. I’d been hoping for months that I could draft him. I first found out about him while researching Fabian Brunnstrom. He’s a 6’2” power forward that scored a point per game for the champions of the Swedish junior league. He went under the radar because he was injured a couple of times this year; he missed the under-18 tournament. As you may know, he has a slightly famous father. Bengt-Ake was a very underrated player in the 80’s and scored over 500 points in the NHL. Next year Anton will be playing in the Allsvenskan for Bofors which is basically the minor leagues in Sweden. Put money on him being drafted in the first round by Washington.

#37 Jacob Markstrom G

On draft day I got home from work and Goffie told me that I got Markstrom with my second pick. I can’t believe no one wanted him in Round 1. He led the J20 goaltenders in save percentage and GAA. Brynas lost the final to Frolunda. He also got 7 games in the SEL with Brynas and was the #1 goalie statistically during the SEL qualifications to save Brynas from being demoted to Allsvenskan. Next season he will be the #1 goalie for Brynas in the Elite League. That will be a major test.

#66 David Carle D 6’ 172

Yet another guy who played for Shattuck-St Mary’s. From what I’ve read, he’s a skilled offensive defenseman similar to Matt. He’s going to Denver just like Matt did and will start for them this season.

Shattuck’s Coach Tom Ward -- "David has made probably the greatest improvement in 18 months that I've ever seen. He was better than average when he came to our program but he was not a guaranteed (NCAA) Division I player. He was nonchalant and didn't take hockey seriously. He was on the verge of being a kid who could have been good, but never did what it took. Then he had a moment … he decided he wanted to be a player and he began to do what was needed, on and off the ice. It was a metamorphosis in his hockey career.

"Now he has a chance to be a very good college player and professional. He's a fantastic skater who reads the ice well and a kid who doesn't leave a stone unturned. He was a kid who thought it would just happen to him because he's (San Jose Sharks defenseman) Matt Carle's brother. Now he understands that's the farthest thing from the truth. Being a brother can be an albatross, but David worked hard and gave himself a chance."

#98 Alexander Fallstrom RW 6’1” 190

Along with David Carle, Fallstrom also played for Shattuck-St. Mary’s this year and was 5th on the team in scoring. He’s very young (9/15 birthdate puts him right on the cutoff) and has not turned 18 yet. Next season he’s going back to Sweden to play for Djurgarden in the junior league. After that he could stay in Sweden or come back for a year of major junior or college hockey. (If you stay in the J20 league and out of the SEL or Allsvenskan you could play in the NCAA).

Tom Ward -- "Alex is a great kid, big and strong. He's got a chance to be a good player. I think one day he'll probably be a typical kind of Swedish player in the NHL. He's going back to Sweden next season to play for Djurgarden."

#99 Max Nicastro 6’3” 175

Nicastro has taken some big steps to play effectively with in the USHL. He plays a very good all-round game, but is first and foremost very responsible in his own end. He’s good puck handling blueliner, who can make a great first pass or join the rush and puck handle when needed. He makes good reads at both ends of the ice. He has showed that he is able to get on the right side of the opposing player and attack effectively, causing turnovers with his stick work. He’s good at closing up lanes and stealing passes. Has been used in all situations for the Steel as well as plays on top powerplay and penalty-kill units. Has good offensive upside, plays the puck well, has good vision and big shot. Will play for Boston University in 2009.

Nicastro was rated the #5 USHL draft prospect by HF.

#100 David Warsofsky

He’s a small 5’9” offensive defenseman. In the under-18 tournament he notched 7 assists for the bronze medal winning United States. He’s a lot less known than Aaron Ness, but he’s also played in international competition and is capable of becoming a similar type player. He’ll play for Boston University next season.

#102 Tim Branholm LW 6’2” 194

Now here’s an off the board pick. He played 34 games for Frolunda in the J20 and was a teammate of Gustafsson. He was mainly used as a 3rd line forechecker and defensive forward, which is why he was 8th in scoring among the forwards. He did suffer a shoulder injury and didn’t play in the Under-18 tournament. That’s why he dropped so much in the rankings.

#103 Vinny Saponari RW 6’ 179

Vinny is a two way winger who is good with the puck. Of course I’m not going to say he handles the puck like a grenade. Compare him to Aaron Palushaj of the Michigan Wolverines. Another draftee of mine going to BU.

#125 Mattias Ekholm D 6’3” 194

Ekholm is a large defenseman playing in the J20 for Mora. He has decent hands and passing skills, but is reportedly not a physical player. Hopefully next year he will play in the Allsvenskan for Mora. Mora had a terrible year and got demoted from the SEL. Hopefully they turn to younger players next season.

#127 Anton Blomqvist D 6’4” 190

Honestly I took a chance at this guy because he was called a sleeper by Kyle Woodlief in the Red Line Report. He also called him the most underrated player in the draft. He’s not even ranked among the top 175 Europeans. He put up rather anonymous statistics playing for Malmo in the J20 league, only 1 assist in 18 games.

#132 Lucas Sandstrom RW 5’9” 174

Well I think he plays like a Sandstrom. A little 5’9” disturber of the peace with 133 PIM’s in 39 games for Mora in the J20. He did find enough time on the ice to get 8 goals and 14 assists. Also got 5 games in the SEL. Tomas Sandstrom is his uncle.

#134 Taylor Stefishen LW 6’ 180

Taylor put up big offensive numbers in the BCHL this season. He had 33 goals and 48 assists in 57 games for Langley, good for 8th overall in league scoring. Next season he’ll play for Ohio State along with Zac Dalpe.

#149 Nik Pokulok D 6’5” 220

His brother Sasha was a 1st round pick by Washington (I didn’t say he was a good one). He’s playing at a prep school (Northwood) and will go to Clarkson in 2009.

Sebastien Erixon
No writeup because I discovered today he's ineligible by 3 days.

Well guys a shocker among the Stars draftees today.

David Carle had to retire because a heart defect was diagnosed. Terrible news, but another death would be much worse.

Hopefully the decision to not take Jimmy Hayes does not come back to haunt me.

Other than that...

Gustafsson went to Washington exactly like I predicted.

Markstrom went #31 to Florida, not as high as I thought he might go.

Of my piles of late round picks, most of the North Americans were drafted.

Nicastro went to Detroit at #91.
Vinny Saponari went to Atlanta at #94.
David Warsofsky #95 by St. Louis.
Taylor Stefishen went #136 to Nashville.

None of my obscure Swedish specials in those last 2 rounds got drafted this year.

I heard about that with David Carle, that is really sad. It is good news that a number of your later picks were taken by teams that have a very good drafting record. Detroit, St. Louis and Nashville all know how to pick their guys.

And you got both Markstrom and Gustaffson so you are obviously pleased with that. Looks like a pretty successful draft Matt.

One of my obscure Swede picks Alexander Fallstrom has reportedly committed to Harvard for 2009. Des Moines (coached by JP Parise) has his rights in the USHL if he chooses to play there for 2008-09.
