Default Beware of Rooter Companies

Just an FYI for everyone out there. My sewer pipe backed up on me a couple of weeks ago so I did what I thought was the right thing and called a Rooter company to come out to unplug the pipe. $600.00 later and the plug still there the guy advised me that there was a problem with the City Main.

I called the city and they were there 2 hours later and had the plugged pipe clear in about 15 minutes. ALSO they do it for FREE

SO whoever reads this please do yourself a favor and if you have a Sink, Toilet or Sewer issue CALL THE CITY FIRST!!!

Hopefully my experience will save someone some money in the future.

Two questions:

Was this Roto Rooter? Or another company that does a similar service?

Did the city ask if you had used another company to determine the problem first?

The company was the Drain Man Inc.

I didn't tell the city that there was previously someone there. I mentioned it to the crew that came out and they said that it is a common mistake that people don't know to call the city first.

Too funny. Literally this morning, I was in line at Timmys and the guy in front of me, a friend of my bro-in-law and also a plumber, asked me how I solved a little prob I had a couple months ago at one of our rental properties...

The tenant called and said that there was a backup in the drain in the basement, so I called the aforementioned guy. He told me to call the city first as it may be their problem and to call him back if it wasn't.

Sure as shiz, it was the city's problem and they indeed fixed it immediately.

He went on to say that it was a good thing I called him and not some random plumber as they have a tendency to come and screw around for a couple of hours (and rack up a bill) before telling you to call the city.

What a strange coincidence.

I sadly made the same mistake a few months ago... except my guy managed to clear it. So I only feel half as ripped off as you.

My sewer backed up on x-mas eve. I called the City first, around 2pm. Getting tired of waiting and being x-mas, I paid a plumber $500 to get out and get it done. The plumber found nothing and the City eventually came close to 7pm and cleared the line. My understanding is that if the blockage is on City property, they don't charge, if it's on your property, there is a fee, but I could be wrong.
