New red spot appears on Jupiter
http://news.cnet.com/2300-11397_3-62...tag=ne.gall.pg
Quote:
Images from the Hubble Space Telescope confirm the appearance of a third giant red spot on Jupiter (the smaller spot to the left). The new feature was recently seen as a white storm raging near the other two red spots, but astronomers believe that it grew so large that it dredged up material beneath the planet's cloud cover, causing it to turn red.

Very interesting!
(Satire)
OMG! We've gotta stop Global Warmi... err... Climate Change! It's not only affecting Earth but affecting Jupiter too! The Storm is getting worse!
(end Satire)

So, do we know what is actually forming the "red spots" (besides a high dose of sugary snack goodness).
Since the planet is made up mostly of gas, is it like a permanent hurricane type pattern?
Or something completely different?

That's pretty much exactly what it is.

Cool.
Sorry for adding nothing more then cool. Astronomy intrigues me to no end, but there is nothing I can add that would be close to interesting.

From the link above:
The Great Red Spot is a storm that's wider than two Earths and has been spotted on Jupiter for at least 168 years and most likely longer. Red Spot Jr. turned red in early 2006.
