Hello,

Got an XBOX the other day as a door prize at a Christmas party. I haven't had a video game system in probably 10 years or so.... my last one was a Super NES.

So... any recommendations on games? I've heard all the hype around Halo 2... is it any good? What type of game is it? Any good RPG titles? I used to love Final Fantasy type games. Any good driving titles? Loved Grand Turisimo that I playd on my friend's Playstation, but I know they don't make that for XBOX...

Thanks.

Depends on what you are looking for:

Halo 1 & 2 -- Passed Halo 1 in a week. Halo 2 is more story laden. The gameplay is pretty much the same as the first one. Rent it for about a week, and you will probably pass it.

Full Spectrum Warrior -- I really liked this game. You get to play as the squad commander of 2 US (marine?) fireteams. There a story to it, although I forget what it is, but it is squad based action. The reason why I like it, is because you actually have to think about what you are doing. If you rush around a corner, most likely, your entire fireteam will be dead. It was developed for the US Army, and is used by them for training.

Need For Speed Underground 1 & 2 -- These are kind of "specialty" racing games. But I find that they are fun. You get a car, and enter races, contests etc, go get money. With your money, you can then get new vehicles, or modify your exsisting vehicle. Its a street racing game.

Project Gothom Racing 1 & 2 -- This is sort of Xbox's answer to Gran Tourismo. You get to drive around in a bunch of super cars. Not sure if you get to upgrade them like in Gran Tourismo, as I didn't get that far into it.

RPG's --
Morrowwind -- It is kind of old. I have not played it. I heard it was really good though. You could basically go anywhere and do anything.

Fable -- This is a pretty good game, but I would rent it rather than purchase it. It is fairly short, and I almost passed it (I think) in 3 or 6 days (can't remember). The selling point of this game is every choice you make, affects your standing in the world and how people percieve you. So if you decide to be an evil bas**rd, people may or may not pay attention to you.

Prince of Persia -- While I have never played a game from this series, the new one "Warrior Within" looks really good.

Hope that helps.

I personally enjoyed Burnout 3 more than the Project Gotham games as far as driving games go....

If you like RPGs I suggest Knights of the Old Republic (Star Wars game). Pretty much what fable was based on, as every choice you make affects how people treat you or what you can do. There is also now Knights of the old replublic 2, but I haven't played it and don't know how it is.

Knights of the Old Republic is a good game. Done by a development company in Edmonton (Bioware). Same company that did Never Winter Nights and all those AD&D games (Baulor's Gate and what not).

When did KOTR 2 come out? Man, I should play that...

I don't know when it came out, but I saw it at Best Buy, But now that I mention Best Buy, I have to start another thread to tell everyone here not to buy anything at best buy

Some games I have enjoyed playing or that are supposed to be really good are:
Halo 1 & 2 - Well these almost go without saying as they are the reason a lot of people have X-Boxes.
Shenmue 2 - I really enjoyed this adventure game. A good game that many people haven't played and probably never will.
Knights of the Old Republic - It's still sitting on my shelf as I haven't gotten around to playing it but everyone tells me it's great.
Need for Speed Underground - A great racing game. I'd agree with the description of the series above.
Soul Calibur 2 - One of the best fighting games around for any system.

Morrowind - The Elder Scrolls III -- it is old, but it is a lot of fun (and very addictive). I highly recommend it if you like RPGs...

Halo 1& 2...obviously.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2 are two must haves as well. Definitely the best RPGs on the system. The first KOTOR is was rated the best game of 2003 by many different places. Don't let the Star Wars title scare you off though - you don't have to be a Star Wars geek to enjoy these games.

Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind is one of my favorite games of all time. Massive RPG where you can go anywhere and do whatever you want at any time. You can play the game for a year without even touching the main quest.

Shenmue 2 is another great game that most people will never play. I guess you'd call it an adventure RPG. Brilliant story. Don't worry about jumping into the series without playing the first game - the game comes with a 10 min recap video of the first game and an hour long movie-style recap.

For racing games, it's between Project Gotham Racing 1 & 2 and Burnout 3. Both are great games. PGR is more of a simulation while Burnout 3 is more of an arcade game.

Halo / Halo 2: Really good games, especially if you're into playing multiplayer with friends. If you ever plan on getting XBox Live, Halo 2 is great on there as well... lots of replay value.

Crimson Skies: I'd been looking for a great flying game since Star Fox back in the SNES and N64 days, and this is definitely it.

Prince of Persia: There's a new one that just came out (The Warrior Within), but if I were you I'd try The Sands of Time first. It'd be much cheaper, and it's a very fun game with incredible atmosphere and music. It captures the essence of the original games so well. Plus, once you've beaten the game it actually unlocks Prince of Persia 1 and 2 (the original computer games) so you can play them. Not too much replay value on this game, but I'd still say it's worth it.

Splinter Cell: I really liked this game too. I haven't actually beaten the whole thing as I got stuck on a level near the end of the game and haven't picked it up since (but I'm meaning to sometime this christmas). Good if you're interested in some tactical shooting, spy gadgets, and sneaking around.

Project Gotham 2: Really good racing game. Looks good too. Lots of replay value on this one. It's especially great if you have XBox Live because every race has an online leaderboard and you can see how you compare to other people around the world for each race (as well as compare to your friends' scores). You can also download the ghosts of the top 10 for each leaderboard so you can watch them, or race against them.

And strangely, as I was writing this post, the FedEx guy just came to deliver a couple new games I had ordered online for cheap - World Championship Poker and Chessmaster. Haven't had a chance to try them yet, but they look good and both have XBox Live support.

Knights of the Old Republic is Awesome. Takes a while to finish as well so it is worth the money.

Tiger Woods 2005 is great. They have a game face feature that allows you to create a character that looks a lot like you. Plus it is a good game.

offline games- halo 1 and 2, fable, mortal kombat is alright, need for speed underground 2, tigerwoods 2005, nhl 2k5(dont buy if your only gonna play in franchise mode because there is a glitch)

Online- halo 2, mortal kombat, tiger woods 2005, nhl2k5, rainbow six 3 black arrow and ghost recon 2.

I would say since u saved about 150-200 on buying an x box that you should at least look into investing in live, it makes the system that much better.

How does XBOX Live work? I've got a Shaw Internet at home... is that all I need to hook it up? The package I got everything in says "Bonus: Free Three Months of XBOX Live" which I'm guessing means it's subscription based...

Does it simply put you into an online playing pool with random oponents, or can you choose to play against a specific person in another city?

Also: Has anyone tried Lord of the Rings: The Third Age? Looking around the net today I found it and it looks kind of cool. It's a separate RPG story (mostly unrelated to the movies/books) but in the same world and time. Link here...

P.S. Thanks for all the game ideas. There's quite the collection of awesome looking games I'd never heard of before. I swear I've been out of touch on anything to do with gaming since my University days!

Here's a good link, it should have all you need to know about Live:
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/Live/about/default.htm

All you need is a cable or DSL connection (that you have), LAN cable, and a credit card. It's pretty easy to set up... If you plug in to your internet connection, you can set it all up from inside your XBox console. I'm just unsure on how the '3 free months' thing works, but it'll probably have some info in that link above.

Xbox live is easy to set up, if u have troubles like me just call the xbox support line(i forget number). The only problem i had was registering my xbox's mac address with telus. Once u get it set up, u can play basically what ever you want with whoever u want once u have friends list with people you like playing with. U get to pick the matchs u want to play. Most live games are set up the same for there lobbies and such except for halo 2 is a bit differnt. Live is made so anybody could use it without thinking. With your 3 month free subscription, i would imagine it would work the same as when i got my 1 year. Once the 3 months are up, u pay for a yearly subscription whice is like 6-7 bucks a month. xbox.com has good support and forums where u can get the help u need and same with www.gamespot.com

As for Lord of the Rings: The Third Age i didnt really like. Its one of those rpg games where u take turns hitting eachother and choosing what moves u want to do. If your a fan of those kind of games like final fantasy then u should enjoy it.

Got to second this. Burnout has a great mode where your mission is to smash cars and cause as much mayhem as possible. Loads of fun. Unlike most games, smashing your car is an integral part of the game as you have to "take out" most of your opponents.

The game's graphics are amazing, and seem to convey the sense of speed far more than the others, IMHO.
