The armed uprising against Israel is a mistake and must end, interim Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas said in an interview published Tuesday, signaling his determination to change direction after Yasser Arafat’s death.

I agree. Once they stop shooting, the inequities and atrocities perpetrated by the Israeli's will be the only thing on the news and that will win them their country, probably in fairly short order.

Right now, they're fighting a war that, at best, can only result in a perpetual, bloody stalemate and where the Israeli's continue to have fans.

That is the most intelligent thing I have heard come from a Palestinian leader I think, ever.
If the Palestinian's want their own state, violence is not the way to get it. If the militents stop the suicide bombing, and killing of Isrealies, I have no doubt in my mind that Isreal will then stop the killing of Palestinians.
Then the vicous cycle will stop, and we all can be one big happy family.

i have to disagree here.

rolling over is what got people we now refer to as palestinians in trouble in the first place. they believed the world community and they believed the zionists. worstly they believed their arab cousins.

the early 90s marked a very peaceful time, the end of the first intifada and deals for peace. all that really happened was increased settler construction.

the only reason we are approaching an endgame is because of this, second intifada. the only reason we're seeing a possible and historic likud-labour coalition in the knesset is because sharon, as much as i hate his blood-soaked innocent-killing past, has realized that ultra-right participation in israel's decisions can only mean more israeli innocents killed.

this is all because the situation on the ground and in the settlements is becoming untenable, it is because palestinians are no longer the pushovers they once were. they are actually fighting back.

I can totally understand why there is an uprising, but I agree that the situation would be best served if it ends (just as it would be if Israel ended the occuaption and removed ALL settlements, but I digress).

Israel won the war a long time and the only way Palestinians will ever be able to get on with things is if they work out a deal. Having said that, they will ever be able to form a real country unless Israel returns all the resources that they have taken from Palestinian land.
