I've noticed this especially watching Jeopardy! at 7:30.

I've noticed this for years...it is really annoying. Thank goodness for PVR, no more commercials!

Yeah it seems to be getting worse, it was brutal during The Office the past few weeks.

The Brick ads used to be notorious for that. Especially when they used to open their ad with a guy screaming: THE BRICK!! Woke my ass up off the couch a couple times.

I especially hate that when you're already blasting the volume to try and watch the show, and then an ad comes on, makes you grab for your remote real quick.

Rogers is by far the worst of them all. If you have Rogers cable you know what I am sayin.

Advertisers claim that the ads are not any louder, but instead they effectively use the entire frequency spectrum at the same level.
Not sure if it's because they want dogs and whales to hear to also hear that annoying garbage or if they're just ensuring the ads sound good on anything from a small TV with a tiny mono speaker to surround sound.
of course it's just an underhanded method to shout in our faces while we're at home. I reach for the remote and hit mute every single time a commercial is on. Although it's horrible when you're in the kitchen and turn the volume way up so you can hear the game, the commercials kick in and blast though your stereo at a deafening level.
I need a compressor in line with my stereo, that would be nice.

Easiest solution: don't watch TV.

Most newer TVs have an auto volume option on them. Basically it keeps things like comercials at about the same volume as the show is.
I have my TVs set up that way; and the only time I notice it is if I'm watching the one TV that doesn't have that feature.
