Default Recycle books?

Do those recycling depots around town in mall parking lots take books? Like big textbooks and stuff?

Just got a bunch of old books I want to get rid of.

If not, any other suggestions? The books I have that I think other people might be interested in I'm going to take to a used book store, but I've got tons of old manuals for software and such that are just garbage.

Yes they do. It just depends on what the paper looks like. If it is similar to a magazine like Macleans or National Geographic, with that type of glossy paper, put them in the bins that say newspaper and magazines.

If the manuals are more along the lines of paper for letters etc, not as glossy, put them in the bins that say cardboard/mixed paper.

If the covers are plastisized or some material that you do not think is paper, simply remove the covers and then put the rest of the manual or book in the appropriate bins.

You probably thought of this already, but phone ahead to used book stores and tell them exactly what you've got. Maybe even e-mail them a list if you can. Driving around to all the used bookstores with boxes of books nobody wants isn't half as much fun as it sounds.

Have you considered dropping some of that stuff off at the University? They're often collecting old books for less privileged countries.

I didn't know they did this. Do you have a link or a phone number handy?

Hm, yeah that might be a better option than the used book stores. I hadn't thought my cunning plan through

2nd on the contact info for that at the UofC.

Donated Books The University of Calgary Bookstore has operated a donated book program for several years. We will accept donations of books from anyone wishing to recycle books they don't want to dispose of. We will remove any personal references in the book, obliterate any old price tags, etc. and stamp them with 'donated book'. We price all donated books at 50 cents, $1.00 or $2.00 depending on the type/quality of the book and display them below signage in the main branch Bookstore in the MacEwan Student Centre, ground floor. 100% of the selling price of the books goes to the campus branch of the Food Bank.

Unfortunately, due to the overwhelming response to this program, we are occasionally required to suspend the program to clear out the back log. Please call the main information desk number at (403) 220-5936 to enquire about the current status of the program and any other book donation programs which may be running at the University of Calgary. We are unable to supply tax receipts for donations but we and the Food Bank greatly appreciate your support.
