Default Going to NYC Hotel Question

Hey everyone, going to visit NYC this summer, and am curious if anyone has any experience staying at the Helmsley hotel?

Online reviews are positive, so just wondering if anyone else has stayed there, or can make recommendations for hotels in Manhattan??

Looking to spend around $220/night...

Thanks!

My wife and I stayed there a couple of years ago - it's in a great location a couple of blocks from Grand Central Station. The piano bar in the hotel is pretty cool and the rooms were decent size for NY. Like everywhere in Manhattan it can be a little noisy, but I am a very light sleeper and didn't have a problem with the noise. I would recommend it, it's a very good value for the price

We are going back in June, but are staying in the Hilton in Times Square as the price was a little better for that time.

We stayed at the Belvedere, which was a couple of blocks off of times sqaure. Quiet and clean hotel.

We stayed at the Red Roof Inn (don't laugh - it was nice) ... Midtown, right across the street from the Empire State Building. It's in your price range and a great location. If I were you, I'd try to be closer to Penn Station than Grand Central. Much of the things we're interested in doing in Manhattan are closer to that part of the island. Grand Central can be really out of the way and add a lot of walking to your day.

You could also try Priceline, we got a Best Western and a well-reviewed suite hotel in Midtown near where we want to be for $130 a night in the middle of the summer.

I will also vouch for this particular Red Roof Inn. I thought it would be awful, but it was a decent hotel in an excellent location. Just a few blocks away from Times Square.

Was the Red Roof the Applecore hotel one?

I stayed at the La Quinta of the same group and it was great value for the money. FANTASTIC location right across from Macy's and backing on to the Empire State Building, and at a good price at the time too. Free breakfast and internet as well.

I imagine all hotels of this group are similar? Not perfect, but pretty damn good - with great locations at a (i hope) good price.

First question is: what do you want to do when you're here? Second question is: what's your budget for the hotel aspect?

Yes, that's the one: Red Roof Inn Manhattan. I know it sounds so funny but it was a very nice hotel for what we needed ... clean, looked nice throughout, fairly new rooms, nice bathrooms ... nearby Penn Station for subway excusrions, right near the ESB and Macy's, 5th Avenue close by, MSG close by, and an awesome little Korean deli where we got bagels every morning ... I think it was called Super 42 or something. Hope it's still there when we get back.
