Default Cancelled Final???

Anybody else a UofCer that went to go write their Final in Kines @ Noon only to find out that it had been cancelled?

Anybody have any idea what's going on? Anybody had this happen before? I didn't even know they could cancel finals and re-schedule them..

That's ridiculous. An exam schedule has to be set in stone...You get so pumped for them.

I think exams can be cancelled if the professor has an emergency. Happened to a friend of mine at the U of C a couple of years ago.

It is because of a drive-by shooting involving a student at the U of C. Perpatrators have threatened coming to the school to hunt said person down and kill them. Hence two exams have been cancelled and will be rescheduled.

this final wouldn't be cpsc 203 would it? because my friend just told me about his getting canceled and about some email he got from campus security about a threat of a few people with guns trying to kill some student.

Early Sunday morning there was a drive-by shooting at the residential home
of a University of Calgary student. Several shots were fired but there
were no injuries. The information provided to the University today suggested
that the perpetrator or perpetrators had threatened to come to campus looking
for the student. As a precaution, the University requested that City Police
attend campus.

The email my friend had^

It was MGIS for me, but CPSC 203 was also in Kines.

Weird that I haven't gotten the email yet...

Would explain all the campus security and police that were around though. And why they kicked us all out there so quickly hardly before we could even find out what was going on.

ohhh, mgis 317? if your teacher is mitchell by any chance, she is really nice, and if you ask her for help during any exam, she actually helps you out, like almost to the point of telling you the answer, i had her for 317, and i would ask her questions during the midterm, and she would like point out key things in the question to help me get the answer, and when i would change it (did this 3 times) she would be like no read that sentence again, and once i'd get it right she'd be like good job and then you know you got the question right.

Hahaha, I wish I had her then. I've got Cam Welsh, he's pretty decent...and it's not really all that hard a course so I can't complain.

Rumour has it we're writing the final on May 1st now though, not exactly impressed with that.

If I get shot on the walk home today I'm going to be so annoyed. I'd miss both the Montreal and Calgary game 7's.

Ahh okay, I've herad that Welsh isn't bad either, and the course is pretty simple, I found the final to be eaiser then the midterm. And yeah i think the rumor your hearing about the 1st is correct, my friend said that he is writing his cpsc on the 1st as well, so they'll probably just proctor both exams at the same time

Just an FYI, all students in MGIS 317 and CPSC 203 who had their exams cancelled today will be re-scheduled for May 1. All students should receive an email tonight in regards to this, if you have alternate plans for this date the exam can be re-scheduled by replying to the sender of the email and arranging it.

WARNING: STRESSED STUDENTS SHOULD NOT READ

Apparently they canceled it because they feared some sort of drive-by shooting may take place.

http://www.gov.calgary.ab.ca/citybea..._141358_8557_0

Early this morning, the Calgary Police Service was made aware
of a situation at the University of Calgary, whereby a
student had asked for an exam deferral due to an incident at
his home over the weekend.

Several shots were fired early Sunday at the student’s home
in the southwest community of Discovery Ridge. No one was
injured in this incident.

Investigators believe this shooting stemmed from an earlier
altercation between two groups at a downtown nightclub late
Saturday.

The student, who was scheduled to a write final exam today,
expressed concern to the University about the incident and
his safety.

This deferral form was given to the U of C by a third party,
at which time the university proactively took safety
measures, deciding to postpone the writing of exams in both
the Red and Gold gymnasiums on the main campus.

As another proactive measure, Calgary Police Service members
were present throughout the morning and afternoon, along with
campus security.

Upon further investigation, the Calgary Police Service has
determined there was no direct threat made to the student
following Sunday’s shooting, and that the safety of the
campus population as a whole was not threatened.

The Calgary Police Service is currently investigating the
shooting incident on Discovery Ridge Boulevard S.W. Police
have recovered several bullet casings from the area.

It is believed the shots were fired at approximately 4:30
a.m., on Sunday, April 20, 2008.

Police were notified of the incident at 11 a.m., after the
homeowners discovered bullet holes in their house and
vehicles.

Police are asking anyone who may have information about this
incident to call police at 266-1234 or Crime Stoppers at 1
-800-222-TIPS (8477).

RELEASED BY THE PUBLIC AFFAIRS/MEDIA RELATIONS UNIT FOR
DISTRICT 2 GIU.

How the hell does this not get reported for more than 5 hours?
Seriously, I don't care if I find bullet holes or not, if I hear a gun going off at 4:30 in the morning, I'm calling the cops.

Is it not very possible that you wouldn't hear some hand guns at 4:30 if you're sleeping? I thought some were pretty quiet.

I suppose.
Could have been something like a .22 or even something with a silencer.
Still kind of weird though.

I would be very angry if my final was postponed because someone had an altercation at a nightclub.

Discovery Ridge - gotta stay away from that dangerous SW

One also has to question the character of the student who was shot at. Innocent, well-meaning people don't end up the target of bullets after a misunderstanding/altercation at a nightclub. The only question in my mind is which gang he belongs to FOB or FK.
