Early this morning, the Calgary Police Service was made aware
of a situation at the University of Calgary, whereby a
student had asked for an exam deferral due to an incident at
his home over the weekend.
Several shots were fired early Sunday at the student’s home
in the southwest community of Discovery Ridge. No one was
injured in this incident.
Investigators believe this shooting stemmed from an earlier
altercation between two groups at a downtown nightclub late
Saturday.
The student, who was scheduled to a write final exam today,
expressed concern to the University about the incident and
his safety.
This deferral form was given to the U of C by a third party,
at which time the university proactively took safety
measures, deciding to postpone the writing of exams in both
the Red and Gold gymnasiums on the main campus.
As another proactive measure, Calgary Police Service members
were present throughout the morning and afternoon, along with
campus security.
Upon further investigation, the Calgary Police Service has
determined there was no direct threat made to the student
following Sunday’s shooting, and that the safety of the
campus population as a whole was not threatened.
The Calgary Police Service is currently investigating the
shooting incident on Discovery Ridge Boulevard S.W. Police
have recovered several bullet casings from the area.
It is believed the shots were fired at approximately 4:30
a.m., on Sunday, April 20, 2008.
Police were notified of the incident at 11 a.m., after the
homeowners discovered bullet holes in their house and
vehicles.
Police are asking anyone who may have information about this
incident to call police at 266-1234 or Crime Stoppers at 1
-800-222-TIPS (8477).
