Where to buy garage door opener?
Garage door opener on the way out, big time. Started firing huge arcs of electricity out of it last night, figured it may need replacing
I have checked the usual suspects (Canadian Tire, Rona, Home Depot) but thought it would be wise to check with the CP masses to see if there was any better place to buy one.
Not sure what brands are best but looks as though I will be spending at least $200. Any opinions on the difference between shaft or chain lift? It is a single small door, 1/2 HP should be enough, yes?
Any with good range? With my current opener, you have to be sitting right in front of the door for it to open, would love to extend that by a few feet too.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I know we've gotten all of our garage door openers from Sears. The one good thing that seems to have come out of that is they have all the remotes for all their models if you need to get a new one because I think they only sell like 2 brands. And have carried those for a pretty long time. I know with one of my friends, they bought their opener at Cdn Tire and when they needed a second remote when their daughter started driving, Cdn tire didn't have it.

Don't worry too much about the availability of replacement or additional remotes ... you can buy universal remotes that can be programmed for any opener, just like the universal remotes you can buy for your TV. Go with the best deal, wherever that happens to be.

I just bought a two openers at Sears a couple of weeks ago. They always seem to have a sale on one of their openers and NSFL said they carry alot of extra accessories as well.

I don't remember the exact brand of the company that makes them, but I did a bit of research on the garage door opener and ended up with one from Home Depot. I have a higher end model of it but if it means anything to you; from my bonus room; when the opener is running; it is quieter than my neighbor's door opener unit. <single family dwelling, attached only by a few feet of common walkway/yard>
Anyway, whatever brand is sold at Home Depot, is rebadged for Sears so you'll be getting the same product.
Hope that helps.
p.s. it is Chamberlain Liftmaster.

Really? There are universal remotes. Jebus, wish I'd known that so I could have told my friend. They had to pay an obscene amount to get a remote shipped from the factory. Now that I think about it...why didn't the guy at Canadian Tire say anything...Well, good to know for next time.

You will be paying at least $200, I would shell out the extra dough and go with a 3/4 HP instead of a 1/2 HP, It will last longer.

I would also recommend Sears. They are decent quality and usually well priced. Servicewise Sears is always good too.
