Oil Change

Where do you guys take your cars for an oil change? Are they all pretty much the same? What price can you expect to pay for a 4 door sedan?

My car has 47k on it, any point in getting a synthetic oil at this point?

I have all my car service, including oil changes, done at the dealership. And I drive at the speed limit in the left lane to get there.

I have a big hammer and know where my waiter main shutoff is...actually, I did change the kitchen sink faucet with no leaks.

Any time is a good time to switch to synthetic. Costs more, but really does prolong the life of your engine.

I got my oil changed at the Mr Lube or whatever it is on McLeod and Hull ave (right by the new London Tower) and they didn't put enough oil in. A good oil change place will show you the dipstick after they're done.

A few years back those morons put too much oil in. Thought it was odd that the kid didn't show me the dipstick so i asked to see it. Sure enough too much and they ended up draining and re filling. I drive across the street to the Co -Op and noticed drips of oil behind my vehicle. Same moron forgot to tighten the plug on the oilpan. Back i went to get the plug re tightened

Yup. Not surprised. After they did that, like an idiot I went there again a few months later and after they were "done" I checked the oil before pulling out of the bay and it was low. I told them to fill it up and they charged me for an extra liter of oil.

I don't go there anymore. I'm back on the DIY wagon.

edit* AND, they reefed the filter on so tight that when I changed it myself the next time, I had to do the old 'screwdriver through the filter' trick to loosen it. Things like that put me in a 'punchy' mood.

I do it myself and I always use synthetic.

I've heard from people that Canadian Tire is generally the place to avoid. I can't confirm this personally, though.

There was another location where the punk told me the tranny fluid was brown and needed changing. I smiled and said the tranny was flushed a month earlier. The look look on his face was priceless!

The up sell in these places are criminal. Sad part is many drivers fall for this scam.

I agree. They tend not to try too many shenanigans on me, but man did they ever go to town on my ex g/f. She'd come home and tell me all the stuff they'd try and sell her and we'd have a good laugh.
I feel sorry for people like old ladies who get conned into paying lube places to do mechanical work. And the shoddy work ethic at some of these places is ridiculous. Not bothering to tighten the oil pan bolt, not bothering to lube the points that are tricky to get at. It really is true that if you want something done right, do it yourself.

I do it myself. It's fun and easy and generally speaking, cheaper.

Just stay away from Penzoil or quaker state. that is a wax based oil and it will sludge up and ruin you motor over time. i like to use mobile 1 or royal purple oil.

Oh, I've always done my own oil changes but this time of year my garage floor is a mess and don't want to have to deal with it right now.

Reason I asked is exactly due to some of the responses, to much/little oil, drain plug not tightened properly. Reasons like that I started doing it myself in the first place. I was hoping to find a place that did it properly each time for a decent price.

Thing I heard about synthetic oil is you don't really want to do it on an older engine as it can develop leaks as synthetic oil is thinner than conventional oil so best to do it while it is still considered a young engine but wasn't really sure what mileage would still be conisidered young.

The drive through places are good, but a little pricey.

Dealerships are a complete ripoff.

Option Import is a great garage that carries Amsoil (amazing synthetic, their super high grade stuff can go 32,000km between changes I believe) and the guy there does great work. Him and his friend who worked at an Acura dealership for something like 10 years started it up and have been getting really good reviews on beyond. I went there and was extremely impressed.

One place that I used to take my care that was surprisingly good an inexpensive was Midas. Sure you come back and they have $1000 worth of stuff they tell you they want to do to your car. But other than that it was fine.

I have been going to Walmart for the past couple times, And they have been amazing, I do sit there and watch them do the oil change.

I usually do it myself but not in the winter...
