Ok, lets see here...

1) Delgado made 18 million last season...not many teams CAN afford that.

2) The Jays are on a 50 million budget with alot of up and coming talent, obviously if Delgado is going to ask for 18 million he's gone.

3) The Jay's offered him a contract for 'substantially less', or so I've heard, however...

4) The Jay's refused to goto salary arbitration with Delgado, making it nearly impossible for him to sign with the Jays, even if he still wanted to. He'd have to wait till the first of may to sign with them BTW.

5) MLB's luxary tax is very weak and basically only effected the Yankees, I don't see why there's bad mouthing of a luxary tax system.

lets compare the MLB luxury tax to the supposed NHLPA version......

MLB has a 20% tax on any dollar spent over $100M, meaning the Yankees payroll of $182M cost them a whopping tax of $16.4M

If the rumours are true, the RedWings $82M payroll would cost them an additional $59M, under the NHLPA proposal.

The MLB styled tax is a joke, that the Yankees can make up in 3 home playoff games. The NHLPA version actually has enough bite to bring about some cost certainty.

The Jays priced themselves out of the market with Carlos' original deal. No arbitrator is going to award the top ranked positional player a decrease in pay, so he would have probably got $20M+.

The Jays will be much better off spending the 20M on some solid free agents to help solidify their ballclub.

Yes, especially some more pitching.

I heard a rumour that they are hot after Koskie...sign him to play 3rd, and then move Hinske over to play 1st? Not sure about that, though...mainly because I am not sure of what to make of Hinske anymore....

Paul Goddfrey was on OTR a couple weeks ago and said the luxury tax has been a success for MLB so far. And this is coming from the Jays who are in the same freakin' division as the Yankees and Red Sox. And that is from a tax at 17.5%. The NHLPA one has the tax rate at 75%.

You be the judge

This has far more to do with the arbitration rules than it does the luxury tax.

The most the Jays could have offered under arbitration was a 10% paycut. Delgado is not worth the $16 million the Jays would have been required to offer, and by failing to offer (as fully expected), the Jays now cannot negotiate with Delgado until after May 01. He will, of course, be long since signed by then.

This one has nothing to do with the luxury tax.
