Default Help me change my husband's mind about cars!!!!

My husband has it stuck in his head that the 2008 Suburu WRX STI is the best way to go. Keep in mind that we already have a 4 door Honda Civic and we are planning on having kids in about 2 years so we can't get a 2 seater sports car or anything fun like that. Also, we are in our early 30s.

I would rather have the new 2008 BMW 135i....it looks much nicer! He wouldnt mind this car (its his 2nd choice) but prefers the "Scoob" (as he calls it) much better. Its supposed to be powerful in terms of engine. I personally think the Suburu looks like a station wagon!

Help! Give me pros of the BMW or cons of the Suburu to change his mind!

Keep in mind that we will keep either car for its lifetime (not leasing it) and that it is going to be our 2nd car (it's not just a car used for fun on weekends, but we will actually use it on a daily basis to go to work etc).

I need info soon or else Im afraid he's going to get the yucky looking Suburu!

Thanks guys!

I also have my mind on the '08 STI!

I would stay away from the BMW ... people I have known that have owned them get fleeced from the dealers on repairs.

How about a compromise? My wife and I (and 2 yr old daughter) bought a 2007 Subaru Legacy GT Ltd Wagon. It is great for a family purpose, and still feels like a performance car. It isnt the rally car that an STI is, but it still has 245 hp. The only downside is that they quit selling them in the US for 2008 (still sell them in Canada), so you'd have to buy a used 2007. I highly recommend the Legacy GT Wagon; we love it.

Edit: Upon further reading, it seems you hate station wagons.... I guess the Legacy GT Wagon might not suite you. How about the Legacy GT Sedan? Personally, for family purposes, I love the wagon - and it feels like a high performing car as well.

With all due respect... is getting the most powerful engine the top priority when you plan on having kids?

Honestly.. the Subaru is the better choice.
It has more room for the kids, a better engine than the 135i.
Plus 135i is exactly what you don't want. A 2 door coupe.

Yes the 135i is nicer looking than the STI.
But the STI has 4 doors, is a sedan (room for kids etc), fun to drive, all wheel drive.
135i is 2 doors, rear wheel drive, probably fun to drive as well.

If you want looks and power, get a used M5

No of course not. It's a combination of things - safety, gas mileage, space in car....engine etc. I don't even like fast cars..thats just my dear husbands thinking so he can enjoy it for the next couple of years. We already have a honda civic so as a 2nd car we want either one of the 2 abovementioned ones.

He sounds like a Scoob-head so I guess he would be against getting the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X, the STI's constant foe through the years (now for the first time, available in Canada).

A Subaru WRX STI? Yawn.

Show him this:

or for a few more pesos:

http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2960741

that is, if you can wait a bit...

I'd even settle for a Mark IV ('93 - '02) Toyota Supra (drool)...

Japanese sports cars are the way to go IMHO...

My brother used to own a BMW and constantly complained about the outrageous repair costs. Not a vehicle i would ever buy.

eewww. the eclipse is brutal.
Under powered and bloated.
The Evo X is a better choice than the eclipse.

I don't know how it's any more "Fast and Furious" for the kids than the Subaru, which honestly, looks more like a hot-hatch for a teenager.

That particular Beamer is quite attrocious looking in my opinion. I'm not a big fan of contemporary BMW styling. Strange curves and a nasty expression on it's "face".

2008 BMW 135i

Evo - STi - Evo

Yeah he doesnt seem to like it...thinks it's a car that my brother should be driving rather than him (my bro is 10 years younger)...

Most of you guys have said Suburu which is what he wants. I just thought the BMW looked nicer. Hack & Lube, you dont like it from your previous post, but I actually think its a nice looking car. I prolly shouldnt be picking cars based on how pretty they look the same way I shouldnt be picking college bball teams in my bracket according to how cute their mascot is (although thats why I picked the Jayhawks to go far). Haha Im just kidding. I guess I didnt know a lot about cars and didnt know that BMWs could be expensive to maintain in comparison to the Subarus etc.

New question..you know how some cars, about 5 years down the road, look like a piece of crap, while other makes/models still look nice? Does this apply to either the Soob or the BMW models this thread is about?

German auto manufacturers have had really horrible reliability and maintenance costs for many years now. If you want a BMW on the cheaper end, I do like the 3-series looks. It's more natural and elegant than the crazier BMW stylings.

The Subaru's hatchback could come in handy if you want to move stuff around. It has a higher quality interior than the Evo and probably a more comfortable ride even though it would not be as fast or could never take a corner like the Evo. But I suppose the youngin's won't be caring about that.

I think that BMW you wanted will look horrible bad 5 years down the line. BMW is trying to change their styling away from that look which their flagship look from the late 90s until recentely. The Subaru, it depends on what you like. Subarus from 1999 still look great to me.

The 3 series is the next level up. Sort of like moving from a Civic to an Accord. Funny but in Europe, the 3 series is considered pretty pedestrian and lower end.

I think it has the best looks that will also stand the test of time because it's not too extreme. It's much more elegant.
BMW 5 series is defintely out of your price range.

The cars reliability should be your number 1 concern.

Any time i buy a vehicle i check out its history for any reliability problems. The last thing you want/need is a vehicle that is always in for repairs.
