It got me too. Maybe if it was a polar bear I would have noticed it.

it's dressed in the same colours as the other team, so your brain is purposely repressing it to pay attention to the team in white.
I guess the point should be "Cyclists dress appropriately to be seen"

I counted 13 and saw the bear, although I couldn't identify it as a bear I thought it was just one of the black team doing it. But my mind did register "hey, that guy is dancing"
Do I win a prize?

I missed the bear entirely. Realizing that was hard to bear!

I've read about this in a couple different books. Apparently 50% of people don't see the bear. And when they switch the test to have you count each pass made by a certain gender the number that notices the bear drops to 25%.

I'm going to have to kindly ask you to cease and desist from teasing my brain.
Thank you and have a nice day.

That was ridiculously obvious to me. I don't know how anyone could not notice that even with the counting.

Weird. The knowledge network had a program dealing with the exact same thing a couple of nights ago - the requirement of attention on memory. The experiment they used was even more telling. They had a magician doing a trick with a string and ring, and you were instructed to watch the trick. Half way through a big yellow spongebob balloon popped up behind him. Completely impossible to miss if you weren't absorbed in the trick, but I completely didn't see it.
The bear example's much more easy to understand - he kind of blends in with team black in a chaotic environment.

At first I was like "what bear?"...then I realized they meant the guy that I thought was dressed in a ugly hoody.

My prof showed us something similar last year in HROD, so I knew what to expect....so I saw the bear. I'll admit the first time I saw it though I didn't see the bear.

This is also why a lot of motorcycles are hit by cars too. The driver just doesn't see them because they aren't expected.
It's getting to be that time of year again when the motorcycles come out. Us riders are rusty too, so be aware.

Same here.
Did this at a seminar with about 30 other people (mostly much older than myself), and I was the only one that pointed it out. People thought I was crazy.
However, I did miss two passes the first time I saw it when the bear came out, while others got the passes accurately but missed the bear completely. Most just completely botched it though.
