and so it begins . . .

Excellent purchase. I was looking at one of those yesterday, so I'm enormously jealous.

So far pretty happy with my MB Pro purchase, though there have been some issues that don't seem to be as easy to resolve as on Windows. I've actually had it crash a few times to the point that I couldn't force close the program and had to hard boot the OS. Another time it simply lost the ability to browse my network drives (I could see them, but no files in them), and one other time Finder (I guess) just toasted because I couldn't click on any icons or anything.

Great hardware though, quiet and pretty cool running.

Name the programs you use/enjoy most on your PC, and the resident Mac heads here will rhyme off good alternatives on the Mac.

So one day if they are the dominant computer, do the PC's become cool and Mac's the evil empire?

seeing as Apples market share for the PC industry is <10% i think we have awhile before we need to worry about that, for webservers it's even less at <2%.

I just saw Apple accounted for 14% of PC sales last month in the US. I remember 2%.

There's not many people around here who remember Hypercard, rebuilding the desktop, searching for mis-behaving extensions, allocating an apps memory or Clarus the dogcow. MOOF!

Anyone here cry when Bill Gates appeared with Steve Jobs at Macworld Boston. Those were some dark times.

I just ordered a iPod Touch through airmiles. That makes 1st gen shuffle, first gen mini, first gen nano, first gen video, first gen touch. I charge $5 to enter my iPod museum.

****Photon, have you repaired your disk permissions with disk utility? I know you got yours second hand, may be worth running.

I did, they rebuilt it before I got it but I did anyway, the only thing it found was the stupid HP printer drivers, fixed every single file from that.

(I hate HP drivers BTW, garbage)

I think I found the root cause though, the spreadsheet contains links to other spreadsheets, and I had a "T:" drive mapped on her old computer, and maybe the links are looking for that, I think that's what causes excel to hang.

So when it comes what do I need to do as far as upgrading stuff or what are the first downloads that you owners installed? I know if it was a Winduhs box I would need to spend a week tweaking and upgrading and installing stuff to make it useful.

any tips?

I love that about my Macbook. I never hear the fan unless I'm doing watching videos on the Internet, or browsing Google Earth. It's so far superior to any laptop I've owned in the past in this regard.

One thing I don't like about my Mac since I installed Leopard is how much more the fan runs. On Tiger I don't recall hearing it more than once or twice in the 2 years I had it. With Leopard it's several times a day. I doubled my RAM hoping that would cut the fan usage down, but it didn't do much as far as that went. I suppose if the only thing I can find to complain about is how much my computer fan turns on things aren't so bad.

You should try downloading the iStat widget. It will tell you what's taking up all your processes. You may have some background application eating up a bunch of resources and causing your fan to overload.

Happened to me with a wireless printer that had jammed, and sent my fans into chaos

Adium and Skype for IM, VLC and flip4mac for videos, Transmission for torrents. That's pretty much it. I have iLife08, Appleworks 08 and Office 2008.

I have the Tips4mac widget on my dashboard. It gives daily tips and tricks, always free programs...The archive of tips is a must read for any new mac user.

the tradeoff though is that Mac laptops are notoriously hot, and the lifespan of the components inside is drastically reduced as a result. and these issues seem more pronounced with the new Macbook Air. Apple even warns users in the manual not to put their "laptops" on your lap for an extended period of time, as it can burn you
